Hello, lovely lolitas.

Next week's plan : buy a black bedsheet at Wal-Mart, and make myself a circle skirt as per these instructions.
Does anyone have any suggestions, corrections, or additions to make to those instructions? If I want it to be no more than about 18" long and to be about 28" at the waist, do you think 4 yards of lace would be enough to trim the bottom?
Oh, and I have a purple sheet that's just laying around (never made it onto my bed)... anyone want a purple circle skirt? ^_^

uhm.. my first suggestion would be to go to your local Hancock fabrics (http://www.hancockfabrics.com/) or Joann (http://www.joann.com/) fabrics, & buy some black cotton broadcloth from there instead of making the skirt out of a bedsheet. I would also recommend you buy a tad more than 4 yds to go around the bottom hem. Go for 61/2 - 7 yards just ot be safe.

^_^ Ah. Bedsheets work miracles if you don't have a fabric store nearby. They're very useful and very comfortable. Easy to get too. I used navy blue Ralph Lauren bedsheets for an American McGee's Alice costume since the only fabric store close to me was in Manhattan. Lol. Bedsheets are a good way to go.

It totally blows. There are barely any fabric stores around anymore and the ones that are still around sometimes don't have what you're looking for. I'm in need of black knit jersey for my Yumiko costume right now and I have to make do with what I have. Blech. XP I hope the sheets work out well for you and I can't to see the end result! ::HUG:: Good luck!

Since you are going for about 18" long and a 28" waist, that means the radius of the circle should be about 25 inches (18 inches plus room for the waist opening). Just do Pi times Radius sqared ( 25 times 25 times Pi) to find out how much lace you need. The result will be in inches.

For an 18" long skirt 4 yards of lace will be enough. My circle skirt was 25" long and four yards of lace was enough to go around the bottom about three inches from the hem. So unless your skirt is no longer than 20 or 22 inches you will be ok.

For a circle skirt, you really have to be careful though. An 18 inch skirt made in the way she explained will have a way different diameter depending on the waist size of the wearer. Even a few inches different in the total radius (measured before cutting out the center for the waist) can add additional feet to the skirt diameter.

After hemming Sailor Moon costumes for people that are size 3 verses size 20, one really gets to see how much this can multiply. Expecially if the skirt is made of two circle skirts gathered together!
