Hi everyone! Recently I’ve been looking more into how Lolita dresses are made, and I had no idea that some brands had designers separate from the seamstresses! I’m working on my first design today and I was wondering..

Can I partner with a seamstress to become a brand? In theory of course, I’d need to work more on designing more dresses, blouses, etc..
Can I apply to be a designer for an already existing brand?

I want to learn more about how it works and how I can become more involved ^^
Here’s my design so far 💕

A new year is good time to change, downsize or exspand your wardrobe.
Whatever it is about refinement or trying something new.
Do you have plan or sticking with a theme? )

It is not about looking for advice. But I feel there is taboo about not spending - carefully saving over more than a few months or using money in much more needed place. But what I see online is spend, spend, spending, people who make incredible bad economic decissions and even encourage others to do it. Especially nembies, If you are not willing to spend, you are ita(indirectly saying)...
I don't care about others economy, but I really dislike the last one. Why? Because someone is channelizing their own low self esteem over on somebody else. Especially if the person is new, It take very much to stand up against it, talking of my own experience.
I feel egl has luckily eneough grown out of it, but some communitys still do it(like Reddit).

Do you think it is problem we as community encourage people in always not so wise spending?
What do you think about being poor?

Ok. It is more a idea. There is prober guides to a lot of substyles, but some styles seems mising or simply out of date. The Classic style has changed a lot since fYeah Lolita Blog's guide to starting a lolita wardrobe, while sweet is more himeish than ever. And Boystyle/Ouji is not longer about wearing long white bloomers to your white blouse.
Some styles I never seen any prober guide to:

One thing I wish I knew back then was: Yes, you can mix & match themes. If it only bag/shoes, you have, you don't have to leave the house on bare feet or without a bag, but I was told by rather strict lolitas I couldn't. Especially it is relevant to heart shaped bag, because at least by my opinion is pretty much the ultimative lolita bag, regardless of styles.

Ever since I was scared away from print with more complicated themes...

Things you wish you knew when you was newbie?

Let talk about them.

Even you don't own a pet, you can post a your favorite animals.

I have only have a dog as pet, but I had a variety of animals in the past: Guniea Pigs, rabbits, fish and even a pony. The last one I really miss, because she out of the sudddenly was being terrible ill and there was no cure, even she could live with it for years, it does not make sense to let her suffer from it.
My dog is just really dumb, he would go with strangers, if they have food.
So much does he like people and of course food. He thinks everybody loves him, because he is so important.

Good evening everyone! Ever since I went back to an old post that talked about a character called P-Chan, I've been wondering: do any of you give names to your usakumya/kumakumya/lyrical bunny/pochettes, etc.?

Since I have heard a lot of lolitas talking about how they just have theirs accumulating dust, from kumya-chan to Pucci François, do you give it a name? Or do you find it strange to name objects? Are you a person who enjoys animal bags or do you find them odd? Let's hear about it!

I never see anyone talking about this (I've seen it like once a loong time ago), so I'm wondering if anyone else is just as annoyed, for lack of a better word, as I am about lolita brands putting crosses on everything now? I understand it for like gothic brands/themes because they take from gothic architecture like elaborate cathedrals and stuff, but that's it.
A lot of lolita brands now seem to just do it because it became a thing for some reason. And I'm just tired of seeing it now, not only does it not make sense to use religious motifs with things that have nothing to do with it (not to mention it's disrespectful to use religious symbols as accessorizing aesthetics like that...I also find it weird like...why would you wear symbols of a religion you're not a part of anyway??), but it's just so overdone at this point. Angelic Pretty is the main culprit I see guilty of this. Who else is just done with seeing crosses everywhere?

After a post was made on rufflechat talking about re-wearing lolita clothing, and with the growing anxiety I've seen among some lolita when it comes to posting their photos online to places like Closet of Frills (FB version of Daily Lolita), it made me wonder a little about how people felt about certain things that seem to keep coming up.

Namely, if people felt judged based on owning/wearing brand versus bodyline, If people felt judged for re-wearing clothing, and if people had any anxiety around posting to things like CoF and Daily lolita.

I'm also interested in looking at age and how long someone has been a lolita, and if those things impact how they feel about these topics.

You can take the (somewhat long, but hopefully a bit fun) survey here

No names are being collected and the information will be shared as part of a post on my blog (rainedragon.com), which I will link to here.

This is an informal and non-scientific survey.

That said, we can of course also have a more long form discussion here. Do you think the community attitudes todards re-wearing clothing have changed since you became a lolita? Do you feel that the greater availability of lolita clothing outside of Japan has changed the dynamic of lolita fashion at all? Have you ever felt insecure about posting to CoF or Daily Lolita? If so, why?

Personally, I feel like there has been a sort of pressure over the last couple years to frequently create photo-based content that is on a very high level, because on social media platforms like FB (CoF), Instagram and Tumblr, that seems to be the content that people most engage with, and the way those platforms are set up, the content "vanishes" very quickly. I feel like this creates a very, very fast pace for content compared to Live Journal and old school blogs, where it was easier to page back through older content (eternally scrolling pages are hard to go back very far on).

((I'm not answering the first two spoon points because I'm more curious what other people have to say :P ))

What are your thoughts?

::edit::

For clarity to "re-wear" something would be to wear the same piece of clothing more than one time. It really is just asking if you wear a dress more than one time before retiring it or selling it.

Hello everyone! I'm writing a seminar paper on Victorian Mourning influence on Gothic Lolita fashion. I don't have a clear thesis yet, but I would like to ask a few questions for the EGL community. Here are my current topic ideas: The Gothic Lolita aesthetic romanticizes elements of Victorian Mourning, which reveals a nostalgia of overt presentation of grief, or The Gothic Lolita fashion style reveals a fascination for mourning and a romanticization of the dead (and undead). I plan to do a close-reading of a Gothic Lolita garment: the one I have chosen is the AATP JSK Funeral Procession of the Rose (in the Bordeaux colorway). I would also like to draw connections between lolita fashion and Victorian fashion, in the sense of colorways: lolita series often have different possible colorways, and during Victorian times, mourning dress resembled high fashion except in matte black (for deep mourning) or shiny black and/or accent colors (for half mourning or second mourning).

Feel free to discuss anything related to mourning themes in lolita fashion in the comments, even if they do not directly relate to my question. Thank you so much!
Questions are under the cut! )

I'm still kind of new to lolita, but I've found some good shops for clothing, but not so many for accessories. Any recommendations? Any favorites you wouldn't mind sharing?

So I thought I'd put this out there since my goal this year is I not to turn on the heat until Thanksgiving and since wearing Lolita this time of year in the Northern hemisphere gets a little iffy. Here are some of the things I'm doing to be a bit more comfortable. Add your thoughts and tricks in the comments!

1. Layer up: since you may not be wearing Lolita when just around the house add a cute sweater and scarf even when just lounging around or doing chores. I sometimes throw in a blanket for good measure on extra chilly mornings. I also have indoor house slippers and down booties that I wear when I'm inside. There are some really cute options out there.

2. Make/ Buy a warm underskirt: A circle skirt made out of polar fleece is an incredibly easy project which requires no hemming and no need for a waist band. I use byhandlondon.com circle skirt calculator for mine. Flannel is another excellent option but requires more finishing. I usually use a hook closure to cut down on bulk. Wear these under your petticoats for add warmth and wind resistance. Don't forget good boots and coat.

3. Drink your tea: Or coffee, or cider, anything hot really. These beverages act as handy (lol. Get it?) little hand warmers and warm you from the inside. Also tea is pretty cheap but just hot water and lemon is great too plus is good for digestion.

4. Use a personal heating pad: these work amazingly well when sitting at your computer or in the living room reading. Mine cost under $10 and costs less than 10 cents a day to run even if I use it all day. For on the go to meet-ups or events you can get portable hand warmers! Even ones that stick to your tummy or back, great for ice skating or sledding!

5. Use a space heater instead of central: For those of you who typically spend most of their time in one room of the house (my bed and office are in the same room for instance) consider only heating that room.

6. Use an electric blanket: Instead of heating my whole bedroom I just heat my bed, this way the blankets aren't freezing cold when I first get in and I don't wake up cold. Again just heating my bed costs less than heating my whole room or house.

7. Invest in those cold weather accessories: Try to find a pair of gloves, hat, earmuffs, coat, etc. that match most of your wardrobe and are actually warm. Fleece lined leggings and thermal shirts are great options since you can either incorporate them into your coord or hide them under clothing.

8. Keep the kitchen humming: Not only will this provide tasty treats but the residual heat can help warm the house as well as provide extra humidity in the air which retains heat better than dry winter air. Just make sure to share!

9. Stay active: One of my favorite things to do in the winter is laundry since folding clothes right of the dryer is heavenly. It's also good to get your core temperature up with some happy dancing, playing with your pets (or loved ones), hula hooping, cleaning, anything that gets you moving. Even a brisk walk around the block can do wonders.

That's all I have although I'm sure there are plenty of other tricks out there. I hope you all had a safe Halloween! Stay warm!

Hi, I just started Lolita recently and I wonder if everyone here wears Lolita everyday or just wear it to convention, meet-up or tea party?
If you only wear it for special occasion, what kind of fashion you wear daily?

I want to know your opinion... if someone wear Lolita, even though it's only once, could it be considered as Lolita?
or... Lolita should be included in lifestyle?

How many of you subscribe to kawaii box? Do you generally like their stuff? Are there other subscription services you'd recommend? Would you be interested in a monthly lolita loot box? What about only quarterly? I'm in business mode!

Hello!

So I have a question... how do YOU plan out your wardrobe?
Do you have an excel spreadsheet with separate tabs for each brand?
Do you just buy whenever you find something you like?
Or do you draw your plan out on the back of a pop quiz? (⌒_⌒;)

Also, opinions on Lolibrary's My Closet and My Wishlist features???
Are there any other "wardrobe builder" websites for lolita that you like?

Hello all! Due to the difficulty of finding a complete guide and resource on how to use Taobao and shopping services/resellers to obtain items from Taobao, I decided to make a blog on the matter.

(Fake cut to my blog's Taobao FAQ)

Of course, the blog/FAQ is not complete at all. I tried to give a quick answer to most questions newbies might have, but I will make posts with further explainations when necessary.

My reason for sharing this on here is that I would love to have feedback on this FAQ as well as suggestions to improve it (questions that could be asked, details that could be added to some answers, etc.). Any kind of input will be gladly appreciated and taken into consideration. <3 Thanks for your attention.

(Also, if you see grammar mistakes, feel free to point them out: you are even encouraged to do so since I'm very conscious of my limitations due to the fact that English is not my first language.)

I figure this question gets asked pretty regularly, but hopefully it's all right if I ask it too
I always forget to add the cut... )

Hello, Lolitas! :) I've been in Lolita for five years, but I've only just signed up to EGL. Please tell me if I'm doing something wrong in posting this, as I'm not so familiar with forums and Livejournal in general.

I was wondering if there are particular Lolita films that you enjoy, or films that have Lolita-like clothes or inspiration in them. Please share your thoughts!

I have one example from the 1970s of a Lolita-like girl, from a French film called Marie Poupée. Unfortunately I can't find subtitles to post here as the video is private, but there is plenty of eyecandy in this film to make it worthwhile if you don't understand French. Jeanne Goupil makes a gorgeous Lolita and also carries a vintage air about her, and all her outfits are exceptionally cute! The story seems rather sweet at first, but as it progresses you can see that it is actually rather sinister; warnings for nudity and violence.

Of course there are also the usual examples, such as Interview with a Vampire, Marie Antoinette and Kamikaze Girls that I enjoy, as well as films and TV with historical settings.
