If You're Going to San Francisco...

Two weeks ago I went in beautiful San Francisco, California for a much-needed vacation. I decided, as part of my "WAFFO I'M FREE FROM WORK!" joy that I was going to wear lolita 24-7 (err... 18-7? I don't have lolita PJs just yet...). I had SO much fun! Everyone at the conference I went to loved my outfit each day (and no, it was not a conference where anyone had ANY idea wtf I was wearing, it was academic and political) and while in SF I even met some of the fabulous local lolitas! But anyway, I thought I'd share my photos. I took so many, that I'm going to just break them up into days so I don't have to do one of those billions-of-photos post. So, here's Thursday of my lolita vacation, Day 1!




To get to SF, my gf and I flew out of Chicago to California. Unfortunately, on Thursday exactly 2 weeks ago, a group of batshit psychos decided to try to blow up airplanes going from the UK to the US using liquid-based explosives. What did this mean? NO LIQUIDS FOR ANYBODY ABOARD THE PLANES. In fact, they searched my bag, decided my lipgloss was a liquid and took it. That's right, you heard me, *took my lipgloss*. I was in lolita, which meant that I could have an f-ing machete hidden in my petticoats or could possibly have stabbed out someone's eye with the tip of my parasol, and I am also a cross-stitcher so I had my stitching with my on the plane which contains needles and a few pocket knives, scissors, and retachable blades that are quite sharp... but the only thing they were concerned about was my lipgloss. This photo sums up just about what I had to say about that:






It should be obvious to everyone by now how awesome it is to go out in lolita. Why, look at the expression of the blonde gal behind me. COMEDY GOLD.



It didn't matter. Soon enough my gf and I were soaring high above the clouds... disturbing other passengers with our random photography.



My gf did do one amazingly bizarre thing, though. She let ME get all the luggage at baggage claim. I think that watching me heave the suitcases off the conveyor belt with my parasol crooked under one arm and a sour expression on my face was amusing to her, because instead of offering help, she snapped this picture. THANKS, JERKFACE! I LOVE YOU, TOO!



As soon as we got outside, though, I was thoroughly grateful for my parasol! That famous California sun is no joke, people! Check it out!



After we settled in at the hotel, we decided to take the famous San Francisco cable cars to get something to eat.



We ended up in nearby Chinatown where we had the MOST delicious dimsum. After that meal, we basically crashed out for the rest of the day. Jet lag and all that. (Coming later-- I meet the lolita that made that gorgeous fan I'm holding!)



Later on, we decided to get all dressed up and go out for a fancy dinner.



Apparently it's unusual for a gal in a bonnet to hail a cab because it took us quite awhile to get a taxi. O_o Or maybe the cabs in SF just kind of suck.


What didn't suck, though, was our restaurant! We ate at a place call Lulu. The food was absolutely delicious, the wine was stellar, and the chocolate cake was literally *to die for*. And some random lady said she liked my dress! HOORAY!




WAFFO! I HAD A VACATION AT LAST!!!

Okay, so that was basically Thursday! I was in SF for another 4 days, so (as you can imagine) there are a TON of photos. In fact, Thurs. was the day we did the least amount of stuff, so prepare for more photo fun!

In a related note, I think it would be neat if people posted photos from "What I Did on My Summer Vacation" (if, of course, those photos are related to egl in some way). I just think it would be neat to see people traveling in lolita... if anyone ever does but me!

I heard about the batshit plane proceedures too... Hopefully they don't take anything from me when I'm on my plane to England because that would just suck D:! (And I'm too scared to wear lolita on the plane :'<...my petticoat would die)

Oh lord-- I hear that on flights to and from the UK you can't have ANYTHING with you onboard. No personal items, no electronics. I *think* you might be allowed books and magazines, but I don't know! I would really check with your airline before packing a carry-on bag about what you are and are not allowed to bring. Good luck with your flight!

PS: My petticoat is pretty awesome and came right back to life with a little bit of hanging upside-down while I napped in the afternoon :)

You totally should! It's so much fun to wander around in lolita every single day. You *especially* should if some of your outfits are comfortable (like the dress with shirring was *great* for the plane), because then it's fashion *and* it's a pretty functional outfit, too. My only advice-- PACK FLATS! My poor white Payless shoes saw *so* much action in SF while my lolita heels were only worn for very short periods of time.

Do you happen to know if it's true that they aren't allowing laptops or any carry-ons anymore because of this? I'm going to NY and was seriously considering taking a train instead because of that. (it takes me 30 seconds to die of boredom, lol)

Hrmm... I don't know about laptops, you might want to call your airline. They didn't take our PDA or MP3 players, but for some reason they *might* be taking laptops? I really don't know! :\

The baby outfit looks lovely on you! You should wear that like, every day! (Okay, maybe not..) But yeah, much cuteness! I don't care for the blue nearly as much, but the baby is stunning on you!
But you shouldn't be upset about the lipgloss! You should have lost that in addition to your stitching stuff... You know, rules being rules and apeshit bastards trying to kill thousands of people and all that. ;)

I suppose that's one way to look at it, yes. I halfway expected them to take all the pointy things out of my stitching... and was quite surprised when it was only my pink, sparkly lipgloss that got picked on. Anyway, yeah the Baby dress is just stunning! I wore the blue Meta luckypack dress because it doesn't have much of a waist and has shirring on the top so it's super-comfy and it also doesn't have too many frills and tiny expensive details that I'd be worried about damaging during a 10 hour airport adventure hauling luggage and whatnot. haha!

you were lucky that they didn't take your stitching . They did take mine ( the whole set , not only the needle and i didn't have any scissor , but everything , even my little nice pocket that i embroidered myself T.T ) I was so sad . They threw it in a dirtbag in front of me , and i couldn't help crying after that , even if i know this is very childish .

i ♥ the pic of you outside with the parasol , walking on the street . It reminds me of Momoko in Kamikaze Girls , at the beiginning of the film , when she walks in the street , speaking about not taking the scooter because this is not elegant enough ^^ .

Oh noes! I would have cried, too! I was pretty upset at just the lipgloss, if they'd taken what I've been stitching on for the past month we would have had a SERIOUS problem! I probably would have let them remove all the needles and blades and then just been like "BUT YOU CANNOT TOSS OUT THE STITCHING." I seriously would have held up my plane while they searched for every needle. But yep, I brought it both too and from with no problems. The lipgloss, though, is CLEARLY A DANGEROUS WEAPON!

You can take cross-stitch onto the plane? With needles and little cuticle scissors and such? They won't take the needles from you? This is news to me. I will attempt possession of cross-stitch onto plane to Japan.

Flights to and from Japan are way different than domestic flights. They might let you take it over, but I know for a fact the Japanese won't let you take scissors on aircraft (they confiscated my very cute and harmless Hello Kitty scissors), so they probably won't let you bring it back.
Although if you have bamboo knitting needles and yarn, you are set.

Ahhhhh! Soooo cute as always! x3 Though I must say... I mean, you're lucky you had someone with you so you weren't totally alone, but I feel nervous going out in even CASUAL loli. Like, I can deal with it, but sometimes (like when I'm bone tired and wanna just get on the train and go home) I really wish I could throw a poncho or something over myself. @_@ Because I was going to a picnic later that day, I went over to my campus for financial aid in full-blown amaloli, and I felt so nervous when I was standing outside the Admissions office, where unfortunately all the asian exchange students had chosen to hang out, and asian women never fail to giggle at me. And when I leave the house...yikes D: I live in a neighborhood that is, at its core, quite ghetto even though the city and the landlords are trying to gentrify it, so when I step out I get stares from tha thugz and the comadres hanging out all over the block.

Basically the point of this comment is, I wish I had your courage, or at least a buddy to hang onto. @_@ Go you!

your expression cracks me up. I'm seriously wonering how this useless home land security will mess with my reguler travel agenda. Trans pacific fights sucks when I can't have my entertainments , or at least a set of noise cancellation head set.. Ugh.
Personally I feel it's a false sense of security, and a huge waste of tax payers money. If someone really wants to sneak somethingo a plane, it's quiet easy.. There are plenty of orfices that drug smugglers has been using, and continue to use for years. Whats next? Manditory cavity searches?!
