Fabric Question

Hi! I have a question. I'm making the frilly blouse on page two of the Handmade G&L book (the blue one). What would but a good fabric to use for a blouse like that? Broadcloth? I'm just curious, because I used I think tricot for my sailor blouse and it frayed really bad.

To stop it fraying:
On the edges of your seams, sew a very small zig-zag stitch along the edges if you're machine has one.
If not. there's a few other diff ways of finishing edges that don't involve zig zag stitch. French seams would work if it's flimsy fabric.

Poplin, any cotton weave really, cotton sateen, gingham, crepe. Broadcloth would be just fine though it's a little rough. I usually use cotton sateen for tops and a regular cotton weave that's as soft as I can get for a good price for skirts. I say go with cotton sateen, it's about 5-6$ a yard but soooo soft and comfy to wear. Good luck!

Oh and sateen doesn't fray badly at all. I haven't had any fraying troubles but it really depends on the hemming job.

If it frays while you're working on it, go around all the edges with Fray-Check right after you cut it out. You can get it at most fabric and craft stores. It works wonders. ^^

I'll try the sateen cotton. I like wearing comfy and soft clothes. I actually bought some fray check, I'll have to use it. I think my problem with my sailor blouse was that I didn't have any seam allowances, I just sewed it together. Thank you all so much. I can't wait to get started, but I have to wait until I get back from a two hour drive to Farmington :(
I think it'll help with the pictures in the book to go by.

Wooo! Good choice! You'll love sateen. Do you actually understand the book? I believe there are seam allowances, I'd say about 5/8 in or 1/2 in. I don't know as I don't understand it!

Frayblock is my best friend, it works so well and is washable. :)
