After reading through cherrytop's post on weather she was getting to old for lolita, I was wondering what all your views are on the subject.

Is there such a thing as a lolita age limit, or is it appropriate for any age?

Does this just apply to certain styles like sweet, gothic, or elegant?

For me personally, I can't imagine myself as an old white haired granny still trying to pull off sweet lolita. While I could see more elegant or aristocratic styles stlyes being worn at any age.

Just Curious, thanks.

I think age only effects sweet lolita, which is sad for me. It's the only lolita I like. But I think a mix of sweet and classic (like classic designs but in baby pink!) can be very good from like 40's on up (it's probably what I'll do).

I think that's all. If you feel young, why not dress it? The old lady on golden girls, I have seen her once with a cardigan and peter pan collar blouse, if she just wore that with a knee length classic lolita skirt, I thought she could be classic lolita. I think that could work very well when you are 80. :)

I dunno, I think for me anyway, lolita works while I'm young (I'm 21) and maybe when I'm an old lady again, because old ladies can be cute. I have a hard time picturing myself as a mother and a lolita. I'll probably switch to a more elegant aristocratic style in my late 20's.

If you look in the mirror and think, "Oh my GOD, I look ridiculous", it's time to stop. I can't see myself at age 30 wearing some of the stuff I wear today. At this point in my life, the thought of never wearing my cute skirts and dresses with my petticoat + pigtails makes me die a little on the inside. But I'm sure that by the time I near 30, I'll be like "Pigtails? Bows? BURN THEM. Give me my business suit and briefcase!"

And if not, oh well. ;]

I got glared daggers by them. :/ They're only pissed off old-bags who hate younger lolitas for not having to waste skirt-money on botox treatments.

So how did I retaliate?

Smile sweetly.

Eh... to each his own. But like others said before, I know I'm going to feel really silly as a 30something trying to pull off lolita. There are others who can work it and look great, but I also have to think about how it affects your lifestyle. Am I really going to have time for lolita when I'm raising kids and working?

Taking a line from Jeff Foxworthy and changing it slightly: if the veins in the back of your leg resemble a road map of the greater city of Pittsburgh, you aren't really in the right age group to wear Elegant Gothic Lolita. There is an age limit to clothing styles, and unfortunatly, most styles are geared towards the youth. It's an inevitable fact that some day you will be too old for youth styles, which is when you have to move on up to styles that fit your age. You can look good, no matter how old you are, but not if you try to dress in something not meant for your body type or age...

I don't know - when I see someone older wearing Lolita I think it's very brave of them. They're still wearing what they love even though it reflects negatively in other people's eyes. Think of Novara - he's approaching his 40s and he is still wearing it all. The difference with him is we idolize him because he's a celebrity and an icon in this fashion, so no one criticizes him for wearing it. I don't think age should matter in one's fashion choices. Wear what you love and ignore the commentary on the sidelines. That is, after all, part of what Lolita is about.

Excellent!
. . . . and I don't think my dear Mana is a spring chicken anymore, either.

And what about Aya? Sure, he seems to have abandoned lolita a bit now, but only a year ago he wore very cute and frilly stuff and he's not 18 or so

Don't even worry about what age is inappropriate for it. Wear it until you grow tired of the fashion.

Personally, I'm going to dress loli until a) I either look too old or b) get fed up of it, whichever comes first. I don't think actual numbers matter.

I would say when you start SHOWING age (like, wrinkling, graying) - you need to switch to aristocrat or something more mature. Lolis are forever young... so as long as you can look the part, you don't have anything to worry about!
I'm 22, in law school, and if anything I need the escape just like the regular nihonjin loli does. It's a rough life, sometimes it's good to be a princess. As long as I look young and cute, I'll be loli!

keep wearing it! the other day i met this cute older tranny lady, who was unknowingly sweet loli...she had little white maryjanes, a white lace skirt, and ruffled shirt...she must have been 60-something and it was just freaking adorable!

In Japan lolita is focused on 19&under once you you hit 20 you're considered to old for lolita ^^;; So some girls lie about their age when they are asked. but they're plenty of older lolitas ^o^

Personally, If you're still into lolita when you're 60, go for it!

I'm 24 (but i'm told i look young--lucky me!) and i think i agree with what everyone else has said: when you yourself decide that you look silly in it, then maybe you could switch to Aristo--or at least Elegant Lolita. I made a new Loli outfit this spring and just as i was finishing it i thought 'i'm going to look ridiculous in this...i'm way too old...' but as soon as i put it on, none of that mattered. I loved it and i loved the way i looked and most of all i loved the way it made me feel. I think it's up to you: no pressure or anything ^^

I tend to agree, Sweet lolita DOES generally look better on younger people, but personally, I'd have a gas if I saw a sweet loli granny walkin down the street. She'd probably be awesome to hang out with XD

As for Aristo's, I agree there too. They've featured some older womwn with their daughters at Moi Dix Moi concerts and such, and it looks rad on them. they have a sultry opeum den mistress like look that I quite dig! ^_^

I myself will wear loli until I'm probably in about my late 20's, and then I'll switch to Aristo, and when I'm even older I'll probably be all-out Victorian.
I've always wanted to be a crazy old witch lady who lives on the corner with all her cats and wears old black Victorian dresses anyways! So it all works out for me... hehe ^_^

You know what? There use to be a site that told you what the brand's target market is and which type of lolita style is suppose to be wore by which age and such. It had all the basics needed to know to be a proper lolita... but I fail to find taht site ever again... I do not know if it is gone now or not.
