Hello, can anyone offer any tips on what lengths petticoats should be compared to your dress?

I noticed some lolitas have their petticoats showing and some that don't.

Is it alright to get a petticoat that's 5-10 cm shorter than your skirt?

Thank you~

It might be ok, if it just makes it have that "bell" shape. Personally I prefer when skirts have a bellshape, rather than the petticoat make them poof out all the way down the skirt(makes it look country square dance ~_~)

my petti is sometimes really short compared to the dress so not much poof =( i need to make another one as that one was badly made...but pettis are not meant to be showing they can but i think only the types with lace at the bottom should be showing...most of the time skirts or dresses have a lace trim at the edge so theres no need for a petti showing

Petties, realistically, should be a couple inches shorter than the skirt or at least have a way to be adjusted to fit that. I wear 19-21 inch length skirts so I have a 17 inch and a 19 inch petticoat. Technically you can just roll the band a bit to adjust the length, but I had a lot of left over material.

If you have a half inch waistband, which is pretty common, you only have to roll it a few times. As long as you flatten it out it's fine. It's hard to notice something like that under a skirt or dress since the petticoat so drastically alters the drape and outline of the dress skirt.

the only time you should have a petticoat showing is if you are going for an erololi or maybe a punk loli look. otherwise, its like, showing off your underwear XD

Definitly don't let your petticoat be obviously too short. A couple of inches is perfect. Anymore tho and your skirt is going to drape in an unflatering kind of way.

After butchering a square dance one to look like a btssb, it ends up being like 2-3 inches shorter. Too short and it'll be noticable. I think around 40 cm if most of your skirts are around 50 cm is right though, maybe a little longer. I had to raise the skirt so the top poof was at the waist band and remove the lace edging at the bottom, it looks better now this way, like a cake.

My petticoat is short compared to all my dresses but it's the most amazing thing ever. It's this one (http://www.metamorphose.gr.jp/onlineshop_eng/undergarments/102209230019.php?ssid=132e21181065932416) from meta. Personally i don't like seeing petticoats showing. My mom says i'm stupid because my petticoat is prettier than some of my skirts... bah. -_-;

If it's a black dress and a black petticoat, aka you can't tell if it's the petti or the skirt, it's ok!
