ue o mu--ite, arukoo-
namida ga koborena-i yoo-ni
nakinagaraa, a-ru-ku-
hitori bo cchi no yoru-

ue o mu-ite, arukoo-
nijinda hoshi o kazoe--te
omoidasu- ha-ru no hii
hitori bo-cchi no yoru-

shiawase wa sora no ue ni
shiawase wa kumo no ue ni

ue o mu--ite, arukoo-
namida ga koborena-i yoo-ni
nakinagaraa, a-ru-ku-

translation:
let us walk while lookin up
so that our tears will not fall.
walking while crying
on this lonely night

let us walk while looking up,
looking through our tears counting hte stars
remembering those spring days
on this lonely night

happiness is in the sky
happiness is above the clouds

let us walks while looking up
so that our tears will not fall
walking while crying
on this lonly night.

"ue o muite arukou" by Kyu Sakamoto, known in the US as "Sukiyaki"

Me too, I hear it almost every other weekend when I go down to Little Tokyo. Seems like at least once, whenever I happen to walke by, Ken Koshio is signing it and playing his guitar. It's a little creepy some times how I always manage to pass during *that* song...

oh yeah. that song is so depressing, but the song itself (not listening to the words) sounds so upbeat...almost like the theme music for some spaghetti western. we had to sing it for a school function this past semester.

I agree, it's a beautiful song, but terribly sad. Of course what makes it worse is that just as Kyu Sakamoto was killed in one of the most tragic plane crashes in history in the mid 80's. (That JAL flight killed something like 500 people.) Now he and his song are a legend, and it's eternally a karaoke staple...

In a side note, there have been some horrific covers of the song over the years, with the melody being the same, but the lyrics completely re-worked (in English). Good for a laugh, but light years behind the original. I would avoid them. (^^)
