I've Really been trying to research lolita (instead of just looking at pictures and basing a dress off that).. and I've found quite a few things.
However, I'm not to good at deciding, and while I LOVE the two dresses I've made for myself..
So, if at all possible.. could someone help me to 'catagorize' my dresses? I know it's not important.. or well, some peope say. It's just something I want to know, since I'm trying to learn.
more spcifically.. does the outfit seem to be.. more cosplay?

edit: more views on the costume.. hehe. and this is the best I have without it looking frumpy. the front view I have of it.. the wind was blowing behind me and I had a badd pose^^

Thank you so much for your time and help! ^^

Date: 2006-05-14 02:46 am (UTC)Anyways, that was my frist pattern draft, and made before I had any research.. so I'm still happy with it.. Don't get me wrong there.
I just.. would like to know how one would go about making something less cosplay, and more true to the 'guidelines' I've read about. (which I've not been able to find yet)

Date: 2006-05-14 02:47 am (UTC)1. The armwarmers add a very cosplay feel.
2. The ends of the puffy sleeves (the white part) add a cosplay feel.
3. The decorations on the hat are a bit too much, and with that dress make it seem more cosplay.
4. The way the skirt is made, with the black at the front, and white on the back, feels cosplay.
I love the skirt's frilly-ness though, and it sits on you well~! ^^
I recon, though, that the shoes should have a bit more of a heel or bottom/platform, because they seem too flat. But that's only because I don't like flat shoes x.x They really pain my feet, if its flat and not shaped~

Date: 2006-05-14 02:48 am (UTC)I can see that design being on a manga character or sold in a boutique in harajuku.
There are certain aspects that carry something from clothing to costume like wings, dress trains, etc etc Look at what Mana wears for MMM shoots versus what he wears in videos and on stage.

Date: 2006-05-14 02:51 am (UTC)I think what makes it look cosplay lolita is the black fabric and the small hat. I love those hats, but I can't ever see them as more than very costumey. As to the fabric, do you know what it is? Perhaps it's just the lighting that makes it look like an inexpensive cotton. Something richer might look less cosplay.
Finally, I adore your shoes. I'm tall, so I'm always looking for cute lolita flats. What brand are they and where did you find them?

Date: 2006-05-14 02:54 am (UTC)and I still love the dress, lol. I just want to attempt something more falling into another catagory, and since my first dress also seemed a bit cosplayish.. I wanted to find out what it is that I do to my dresses that makes them look that way^^
and the fabric is something I got from the costume shop at school.. so not sure what it is

Date: 2006-05-14 03:36 am (UTC)Well, technically Goth Loli is costume playing, but that's not the point.
Personally I find the arm warmers to be the coolest part of the outfit. Also, are you using wire to make the layers 'poof' of it it more like a petti coat? I really love how it looks. The lace, the hat, everything about it is right lovely and looks exactly like the girls I saw in Harajuku.

Date: 2006-05-14 03:37 am (UTC)Other than that, this is definitely a good first try (if that's what it is)! Except for what I mentioned above, the shape seems to be about right...but I can't say much more when you're turned to the side like that. I'm not endorsing the turn-your-toes-in cutesy look so many non-Japanese lolitas pose in—it's not like the Japanese girls mean to do it, guys!—but standing in profile obscures the details of your dress that you're asking us to critique.

Date: 2006-05-14 03:43 am (UTC)And the shoes, I hate flats in general and even more so when paired with lolita. Plain black maryjanes with a small heel or platform would look much better and reduce the cosplay feel (I think so, anyways)
But overall I really love it, I don't see how it's that cosplay-ish...

thank you^^

Date: 2006-05-14 04:23 am (UTC)I recon, since we have a similarity (evil parents to the point of real insanity) we should run away together and form our own lolita house XD
Oh, and to be on topic, the new pics in this blog aren't bad, though, to amaya_demorte:
Take MANY MANY pics, so that there's a bigger chance you get one that is excellent. Many angles, many lights, many camera effects, etc. The one's you put up are cute, but SMILE more~ ^^ And, the sleeves/armwarmers over power the dress, I think, because they have a lot more detail. They're a bit long as well. But gosh, who am I to say that stuff? I only own 2 dresses so far >.

Date: 2006-05-14 07:37 am (UTC)And despite the arm warmers being "cosplayish" as people say, I think they're very original. I like them. Maybe if you made it into a faux shirt(like the kind that only have collar/upper part and sleeves, for layering under jumpers, it'd be less cosplayish. I love well done bell sleeves. The entire outfit is cut very flattering, and lays well.
And my friend has your shoes. They rock so much. :D

Date: 2006-05-14 10:53 am (UTC)1. the cut of the top part of the dress. the main thing that really makes it seem cosplay is the pheasant-looking top part of the dress. it's too simple compared to the bottom half. now, rather than suggesting to put a vomit about of lace on it, i'd suggest adding cross straps to the front so that it'll look more loli. and if you have any more of the white fabric, i'd also suggest bringing up the neck line about an inch or two so that it'll have a square neckline instead of that rounded one. kinda like this dress (http://www.babyssb.co.jp/shopping/jumper/129232.html). in your case, a slight dip would be nicer since you have so much white going on in the bottom of your dress.
2.armwarmers. but you know, i actually like them and i'm not that big of a fan when it comes to that kind of thing. maybe you can attatch the them to the dress and have detatchable sleeves so that you can wear it with or without but not have it look like armwarmers.
3. socks and shoes. i recommend sock toppers or adding lace to the top of your knee-highs. also, while the shoes are cute, i thing black shoes with white accents would work better with the outfit.
4. hat. it looks cosplayish. i dunno exactly what's off about it but i think the's the lace around the edges. your outfit would look pretty with a headdress or black ribbon bow clips slightly above eye level on both sides of your hair. good rule of thumb: if you have a lot of things going on in your dress, it's better to downplay the hair acessories so that you don't look like it's "too much".

Only things to change: Petticoat that doesn't show and shoes with bit more heel

Date: 2006-05-14 02:48 pm (UTC)I would suggest investing in a really nice petticoat whose length meets with normal Loli skirt lengths...
