Hello all. I have a question (as per usual :D). I live in a country where the average temperature is about 30°C (86°F) all year round. While I do like to wear knee-socks with my lolita outfits, it can get rather hot so would it be a terrible sin to go without? As for the upper part of my body, how much skin can I expose without looking too un-loli? I usually wear long-sleevd blouses but this too can get rather hot, especially outside of air-conditioned buildings. The heat is not your friend when it comes to dressing loli. Thank you for your help!

I don't think 'rules' are as b ig as everyone makes out. When you might be the only loli (?)n for a distance i don't think anyone will care, especcially with such hot weather,

short socks and a jumperdress without the blouse would still be obviously lolita, especcially if you had a headress and cuffs and cute mary janes

I agree with this sentiment. I live in a hot and humid place too. And actually you can find lots of examples in the spring and summer bible issues of dresses without blouses underneath and bare legs with pretty shoes. I wouldn't wear a jumper dress that looks like it's meant to have a blouse under it because it would look silly. However, a jumper dress with a versatile look would work well.

Here are just a few examples:

I agree. I've seen many short sleeved dresses, and jumper skirts without blouses. I really like detachable sleeve blouses/dresses as they can be worn at any time of the year. Short socks are fine I would say. Meta sells ankle socks with lace on them. For example: http://www.metamorphose.gr.jp/onlineshop_eng/socks/104370020029.php?ssid=132e21181061902331

But some of those girls electroncat pointed out had bare legs or really sheer stockings.

don't forget to wear natural fabrics, like cotton or silk. they stop one perspiring so much. Also short puffed sleeved shirts perhaps. Maybe you could also wear very sheer stockings in your skin colour. if you wear light colours near your face remember they will relfect light onto your face so wear sunblock, unless you have dark skin.

I'm going to have to disagree with your comment in your article that bloomers are only for warmth. They're actually also for modesty. When you're wearing a petticoat or anything that makes your dress stand out, you're liable to let people get unintended peaks at your panties. Rather than suggesting doing away with them entirely, I would suggest a light weight pair.

Certainly. I actually have a short pair of those that I prefer to wear most of the time. They're great. ^__^ They can be a bit hot though as they're synthetic which is why I might suggest a pair light weight cotton bloomers to someone who lives where it's hot all the time or has to walk around in the heat a lot. Bloomers don't have to be made of thick material. They can be made of a nice thin broadcloth or something lighter and still be functional and comfortable. I have a pair of vintage bloomers that I keep around for inspiration and they're made of a mid-weight cotton so there is precedent for it. The only time bloomers need to be heavy is if you intend to wear them alone. It really comes down to personal preference. But I do think that if you're going to have a petticoat and you're going to walk upstairs or stand anywhere above anyone else during the day, you really should consider bloomers for modesty's sake. I suppose if you're going for a more casual look without a poofy petti, you could also wear some cute ruffle-butt panties. ^^

Bloomers might be considered somewhat modest today, but back when they were invented, bifurcated undergarments for women were not considered ladylike in the least, and originally reached to one's ankles. Previous to this, petticoats and crinolines were the only underwear.
In modern times, I believe we can dispatch with them as unneccessary. I wear them solely for warmth, and know other Lolitas who disregard them altogether even in cold weather, but especially in warm.

I agree with much of what has been said. I think you can dispense with the blouse all together in many cases or at least get yourself some nice light weight short sleeved blouses, wear cute lacey ankle socks instead of knee highs, some small tasteful barrettes instead of a full out headdress, a light weight petticoat and bloomers or not depending on your discretion. I've gone without bloomers and felt fine, but it can be a modesty issue. Don't make yourself die of heat exhaustion for fashion. I think sweating profusely because of the heat is far more unloli than showing a bit of skin on your arms and legs.

Classic lolita looks good without blouses and socks.

I meant no blouse under a jumper not just going topless...

In the photos posted by electroncat, this Lolita is exposing about the maximum amount of skin, I think.

If her sleeves were straps, she would be exposing a bit more, which would be acceptable. Her hemline is right above her knee, and any shorter than that might be revealing too much.

When wearing certain baby jumpers, I would be a bit worried. I have one that has MASSIVE arm holes, which lead to showing a bit too much of my ribs for comfort. If I turn a bit too much to the side it shows some of my breast, so I obviously cannot wear it without a blouse underneath.

Then again, that's a very odd jumper, it's much bigger than I expected it to be when I got it..

As it has been said before, you can find some cute jumper skirts that goes well without a blouse underneath. Here are some patterns of light dresses and jumpers :

You could also wear sleeveless tops. The gosu rori pattern books have some :

Hope it helps a little. ^^
