I know we've discussed Hot Topic dresses before, so maybe this one has already been pointed out. Anyway, I found another dress from Hot Topic that they claim to be lolita.

http://www.hottopic.com/store/product.asp?LS=0&ITEM=228887&RN=146

I personally think it lacks some elements. Any thoughts on it?

needs a petticoat. but i suppose it's not that different-looking than something Bodyline might make...

Guys, there WAS such thing as Lolita in North America in the 60's you know. It was part of the MOD fashion. They really aren't thinking of Gothic Lolita in the sense that you may be thinking of when they claim outfits to be 'lolita'. This may be why it doesn't fit your standards of what "Lolita" is.

I don't know how much they're claiming it to be gothic lolita. They're just calling it lolita. There's a difference between the two. Does remind me of Bodyline tho.

I saw this dress in the store, the materials were cheap and tacky and despite the picture on the website it was very low cut.

Yeah I recently saw it at the store in person too... The lace was just awful.

It says it's made of 3% spandex, gothic&lolita + dress made of stretchy fabric = tacky lolita >_<.

I agree with a lot said above, especially the fact that they call it lolita and not gothic lolita. Also it looks really similar to a cheaper style bodyline dress. you know, honestly besides their very first loli dress (the jumper which i *like*) I think that this is one of the closest in design If there is allowance for a pettie under the skirt (i just noticed that)

I loved their first Jumper.. but this is horrible.

ok wait. I'm confused about why it's better to call it lolita than gothic lolita. It doesn't look lolita in the mod mary quant sense of the word to me. But like others have said, it looks a lot like a bodyline dress. But uum I think that calling it gothic lolita would be MORE accurate than calling it jut lolita. Wording aside, what's with the polkadot underskirt and visible bra straps? If someone can remake this dress and make it look good I will send them some matching brand socks from Japan.

Actually, if it had a petticoat and a shirt underneath it, I don't think that it would be that bad.

Also, if someone could alter it by cutting that polka-dot bullshit off and replacing it with black ruffles, it will look a lot nicer.

It isn't, just like the rest of theirs. Isn't it banned from EGL that you can't make posts about HT?

From: [identity profile] emiko.livejournal.com
There was a time where HT, Stefani, etc were 'banned' topics, only because of the flame wars that would erupt, but we've trimmed down the list o' rules, so now everything's pretty much fair game ^^;

How am I supposed to tell anything about that dress when the model is in a cruddy pose and ruining the line of the thing?

its.. horrible XD! I dont know, I eve like bodyline dresses much more than that one o.O!
and I do find it much worse for them to call it Lolita than gothic lolita... if they call it gothic lolita at least have the excuse that the word "gothic" confused them a little in image concepts, but that dress looks much more like a 60's inspired dress than lolita..

does anyone still remeber that lolita does talk a lot about innocence, and cute and prettyness...? because that thing is anything BUT cute, or innocent.. or pretty...:S

I do see how one might find this design to be somewhat gothic lolita. Although it seems to be hastily thrown together, attemping to achieve the GL look with little to no effort to what GL is about.

I'm not against Hot Topic carrying GL products, some of us can't afford $100+ blouses or skirts, but I just feel like they could do much better.

If any of the talented girls in the egl community was able to design for them...the world would be a better place...and then they might actually get a decent following of their uhh..."lolita" cra...goods. Why god....why..?!?

I saw this dress in Hot Topic about two weeks ago and the quality SUCKS. I thought it was gonna fall apart on the hanger mannequin. *in my opinion*

It seems (hot topic) see's lolita as a possible fad and wants to make a quick buck off the market, which is fine that's going to happen with any fashion (can't stop it realistically) but I mean can't they at least do a little bit better then that?
looks like they didn't do their research.

Maybe someone should post on the HT forums to let them know that they could do better...?

Save your $64, and then somehow procure another $64, and by that time, you will have a Bodyline dress that eclipses this frightening eyesore. When it comes to Lolita, a key trait is patience. Another key trait is taste.

It looks like the dress doesn't really fit the model properly. However, I don't think the dress is completely unworkable (apart from taking it all apart and reconstructing it from scratch, seeing as it looks like it can barely hold together for one day). Maybe replacing the lace it has with better lace, or just changing the bows to black ones to match the ribbon on the lace, and changing the ribbon on the bottom to black. Adding a ribbon to criss cross on the front and loop around the neck and even getting rid of the straps on the dress will make it look better. Add a petticoat and replace that polka dot fabric with some nice white one. There's nothing wrong with polka dotted loli dresses, of course, but it just doesn't fit well with this dress. Maybe adding a black corset to the waist, since it looks like it was going for a gothic loli look. That's all I can think of... maybe replacing the sleeves works too, and if you find the right material you can make long sleeves for it, or detachable long sleeves. I can see it looking better with those changes (at least a lot better than it is now), but I don't know who'd want to go through all the trouble of buying the dress at that price to modify it in hopes of making it look halfway decent (my guess) when they can find and save up for a much better loli dress.

I'm not a fan of the dress.
I've been able to find some very nice loliable pieces at HT. A couple blouses and corset tops. I only buy them when they're on sale, I won't pay full price for a cheaply made piece. It's a fun store, but they really need to upgrade their materials and construction of their clothing and lower the prices.

I saw this dress up close in a HT store. To be honest, it was a poor attempt to try and get the style. The fabric they used was way too light so it could tear easily. Also it is way too low cut in the chest area, oh and those polka-dot ribbons...uhg! it did NOT match well at all! I think they were better off with that black and white jumper they did a while back.
