Do any of you lovely lolis/gents have any tips for bleaching hair?

Here's my quandary:
I have dark blonde hair. I've bleached it out bunches, as anyone on my friends list would know,
but I can't make the cross to platinum white.

Click here to see my current color.
And a second picture of the current status...
Click here to see the color I desire.

ANY TIPS???

To get that platinum tone, you will need to use a violet toner. (Violet is the opposite of yellow in the spectrum and will get rid of the blonde-yellow tones).

You need toner. Or a platinum blonde hairdye...and tons of conditioner.

If you were in the UK I would say get to 'Sally's'. But I don't know if they have that shop in the US. It's a hairdressers supermarket...and has tons of useful stuff.

certain colors will neutralize other colors, if you use violet toner it takes the yellow tones out of bleached blond hair to turn it white/platinum. it's like how you can use yellow concealer to cover purple bruises/under eye circles, green concealer to cover red splotches, etc, etc ^-^

In my head, it's like...

- There's developer. 20, 30, 40 volume, which is the actual 'peroxide' part of things. Peroxide + lots of other chemicals. You need this part to open up your hair shaft and let other things in. It probably also removes pigment a tiny bit on its own.

- Then there's two main catagories of things you can mix with developer to -do- things to your hair.
- bleach, which will pull pigment from your hair... either your natural pigment or also dyed pigment
- toner, which will -put- pigment into your hair. Reds, blacks, browns, violet for the platinum.

So if you mix developer + bleach, you are subtracting from your hair. If you mix developer + toner, you are maybe subtracting a tiny bit but adding more.

And then Special Effects/Punky Colour/Manic Panic and such don't involve developer at all, but basically they get soaked into your hair, resting in all the porous ragged holes you made if you bleached your hair.

ahhhh. *feels brain blooming* Thank you very much. I usually use punky colour plum, so have never used any of these esoteric girl thhings. *pouts* Would like to learn more though. My girlyness has recently come out of the closet.

Heehee, you're welcome... but you know, if Punky Colour Plum is working for you and you've never used these abovementioned things, I'd say keep doing what you're doing. Because once you start with these things, it's very easy to get addicted and then have a frizzy fried mess on your head. Subtracting from your hair leaves very angry hair.

lol - I know. M'love decided l;ast time that we were going to experiment with bleaching it and I grabbed a blonde kit off the shelf from the local drugmart. Bad mistake. Fried straw. I'm sure there's ways around that, but I had most of it just chopped off. *rueful grins*

Wella Wellite bleach w/40 volume developer, plus a tube of violet blonde hair toner.

Followed by Clairol Creme Toner number 323D "Extra Light Platinum", also mixed with 40 volume developer.

Followed by L'oreal Mega Moisturizing Conditioner. It comes in a wierd jar-type container, it's a pain to deal with in the shower, I always just transfer it to a bottle, but it will completely resurrect dead hair.

You will also need a bottle of purple tint shampoo "Glimmer lights" I believe is the name, Sally's employees will know what you mean if you say "Old People Shampoo".

Failing that, you could buy a wig. Honestly, there's no way to get your hair that light without frying it utterly, and it will end up feeling kinda like plastic anyway. You might be happier if it's something you can take off at the end of the night.

But the chemical combo will work. I have had sheer paper white hair in the past. You should really wait a whole week (at least) between heavy bleachings, with much application (even leave in application) of the conditioner. It will help your hair avoid falling out. Which was usually what the 4th generation bleached parts of mine would do, on the 5th bleaching as I was getting my roots. Svaed me a ton on haircuts.
