Some american EGL girls, in real life, not online... tend to be *very rude*. Has any one else noticed this? They act like they're better than EVERYONE around them, and not in an 'I'm in character" way. It usually happens at concerts for me.... they'll be all dressed up, and if you say something nice about their costume, they treat you like scum, or think you've never heard of the fashion at all. How can Lolita's be mean?! ;_;
My friend even drew something about it. A

DISCLAIMER: In NO WAY are either of us attacking all american EGL girls -- just the mean ones. We've never been to other countries, so we don't know if there are mean lolitas there. :D

There are people in just about every sub-culture (especially in the smaller ones) who like to think of themselves as somehow "elite". Because they're different, enlightened, and just so much cooler than everyone else. It baffles me how people can fail to see how utterly lame this makes them look.

That's how I feel about a lot of j-rock fangirls, too. XD
Although I can't agree more. I have met some very nice EGLs (there was one at AX 2003, she had an original BTSSB dress and doll, so cute and nice she was..) in real life..
But the majority are very rude. Very rude. I think it's funny though, I remember reading a code and pledge for Lolitas somewhere (I think it was in one of the Bibles? o.o; can't remember at all. T_T;) and it said something like how Lolitas should always smile and be polite and use the most polite speech and bowing (how cute, I always try to *^_^*).
And then of course, I go off and find some people who tell me to f off when I say their outfit is cute. Figures. ^^;
Then again there are also very rude people online too, but mostly its those people who you would hate meeting in real life. ^^;;

waaah i talked to that Girl! Hayato (from Duel Jewel) held her dolfie during the concert! she was really nice!!! i was standing close to her while waiting for the Duel Jewel autograph signing.

actually... i've encountered girls who think they're so cool... but i end up ignoring them. it's so much more cooler when you've got a bunch of good EGL friends in a bunch... versus one tiny measily lil EGL l33t-ist. hahaha. :X

That's a good idea... like, take a good group of lolitas and find one bad one and... stomp on her with our cute platforms. *nods cutely*
(kidding, I don't advocate lolita violence in anyway. ^_^)
That girl was very nice and cute, I saw her and asked her for a photo and where she bought all of her things on that Thursday, waiting in line for the Blood/DJ concert. Proves there *are* nice lolitas out there, aside from this list. ^_^ I wonder, then, what Hayato (and all of DJ, too) thinks of all the EGLs they saw at AX. ^^;

Myu. I remember my friend reading me the loli code... all of my friends are super-sweet -- I REALLY REALLY HATE mean lolis. *pouts* Isn't the personality supposed to be part of the subculture? Lolitas should be cheerful and nice! At the very least, shy and sweet, if not bubbly and outgoing!

*stomps around, pouts... but can't stay that way for long, so beams at everyone*

On a related-yet-different note, I have noticed I have one really nice Lolita trait that a lot of my other goth friends don't have -- when someone tries to take my picture (when I'm dressed up) I smile and pose... I assume the person is trying to, you know, take a snap!

My other goth friends see this is some kind of insult... like "freaks in the zoo" or something... I mean, it might be true, but myu! I like thinking people are taking pictures 'cause I'm pretty and cute. Myu! *hearts*

gomen ne. i can't make it to comic con!!! T_T;;; I hope you take tons and tons and tons of wonderful pictures!I've planned to go see dearest Takanori at Otakon and that's going to cost me *tons* of money.

Speaking of which... of Loli's with awful attitudes. A loli friend of mine, who goes by the name of Morgan posted on the Black Lolita Mailing List (i'm not sure how many people in this LJ community are in it... so i'm sorry if you're re-reading text) a little bit about loli's with awful attitudes, what kind of loli behavior should be expected. here goes:

"Americans, in the greater part, are not going
to understand Gothic Lolita fashion. While they may
find those of us who dress in the full nine yards of
platform Mary Janes, lace top stockings, lace drenched
dresses, blouses, and parasols, complete with sausage
curls to be charming and eccentric, it is not likely a
fashion that is going to take the nation, nor even the
goth scene, by storm. A toned down version of Gothic
Lolita, simplified dresses and skirts with less lace
and cuts designed for a little more sex appeal, may
however catch on very nicely.

This is advantageous, in a way, as long as a "Lolier
than thou" attitude (to quote an earlier post) does
not develope in those of us who are willing to take
the stares and whispered comments to dress to the
nines. A greater understanding of what Gothic Lolita
is could be fostered, and you may one day find
yourself being approached by a more simplifed Lolita
who will commend your courage to go all the way.
...

One of the prided virtues of a Gothic Lolita or
Aristocrat, above even fashion as I believe, is
manners. Japanese Goth Lolis culture and cultivate
themselves, they speak in honorific and humble
language when they converse, and school themselves in
grace and good manners. How shameful is it for a
foreign Lolita to be elitist in fashion when s/he
fails so miserably in etiquette?

I humbly ask that at the very least we all mind the
golden rule: to treat others as we would be treated,
and perhaps to follow a bit of Mother's advice: if you
don't have something nice or helpful to say, don't say
anything at all. Finally, I ask that I not be hated
by any for this lengthy discourse and its nature, I
simply feel strongly about the matter of critism,
being some one very sensitive to it myself."

honestly though, i'd have to aggree... that the "Lolier than thou" behaviour is bad! that lolis should be mannerly, kind, prim and proper... that's how good loli's should be. i can't even begin to imagine how loli's could pursue such an attitude! i mean, so the goth loli fashion is very new to me, less then a year, yet i enjoy being in the presence of other loli's those more knowledgeable, and those who are still new to the fashion. it's such a wonderful experience to share with others instead of insinuating such elitist behavior...

okay. i'll stop rambling now. go Loli power and massive innocent platform stomping! with pretty lacy parasol! *prances off*

Manners are SO important -- a good deal of loli is recapturing a sort of "neo-victorian" life, ne? Manners are the backbone of Victorian behaviour. EGA even more refined, I'd imagine, than cute-playful-little-girl lolita. A thought.

Good manners + sweet personality = cute gothlolis!

I'm on the Black Lolita list and saw the cause of that reply. It was pretty scathing.
And I think it's ironic, since about six-nine months ago when I wore my first Loli outfit to a goth club here in floriduh, I had a group of elitist goths laugh at me whenever I was in their vicinity.
I got a similar reaction to my outfits when I did wear gothier outfits to clubs as well. My point? I find it disheartening since we are such a small group[Loli's in the U.S. and other non-asian countries] we should be sticking together!
I can't fathom being rude to someone who was sweet and complimented my outfit, where is their justification?
I'm sorry you had to put up with that...

Uhm.. anyway. (I'm not being pervy dammit, i meant like.. fullest bow.. why should i have to explain myself this is a egl group)
It's interesting where this has gone.
I agree with [livejournal.com profile] girlygoat ^_^ Whenever [livejournal.com profile] junnokoneko and I go out to the mall in our EGL best, sure we're pointed at and we're definitely laughed at, but we tend to ignore them. I think it takes courage from the other person to ask, and I think it's the people who ask why are you wearing bloomers and petticoats in the 21st century, who are really the ones who could be just as open minded as we are. I think it takes bravery from both sides of the spectrum. And normally, if we're asked about it, we explain in a polite manner, and in the end, it's the other person who is impressed, not only because we either made it ourselves, or had someone make it for us, but also because we take an interest in the Victorian age, and are cultured enough to explore other countries cultures (..Japan.)
It's the people who stop and gawk, or laugh, or tease, or the people who scoff (on either side of the coin here, the psuedo-poser EGL's or the people who would think Baby, the Stars Shine Bright is a Frank Sinatra song) who are the real ignorant and close-minded people. .. and should burn and be stomped on with our mary janes... errrm *whistles*

I was very lucky in that all the girls I approached at AX were incredibly nice (even when I think I accidentally interrupted one with her boyfriend...I felt sooooooo bad! I thought they were just in line together, but then they posed together...eep.) But I've found that the girls who tend to dress more "american loli" (which is what I call it when they add the leather and show more skin then japanese lolis usually do) are the ones who have a bit of a greater tendency to have the "F-you!!" attitude. At least, that's been my experience at the few cons I've been to where I took photos and gave compliments and such. (By the way, hi, first post, don't own anything loli yet, but as soon as I can sew, I have a design or two in mind, nice to meet you all! ^_~)

Ergh I just posted but dammit..
No, I really can't agree trischan with the AX. I met (or at least, met from a distance) some real choice word type of EGL's at AX. I don't want to offend anybody, of course, so I won't really start on it. Yes, there was a handful that I can count one hand who were nice. But all the others were totally rude, and made me sick with what they interpreted as lolita, i.e. this newly dubbed American style. Wayyyyy too short skirts, so short you couldn't even fit a petticoat in there, plus of course torn-up stockings and ripped things (and they weren't going for an h. naoto or alice auaa look, either >_>) and.. if any of my things were ripped I would scream bloody murder.
Plus they were really rude, and scoffed if you didn't bow down at their feet and oggle how they spent 300 or 400 dollars on their outfit, that they claimed to make totally themselves, which was totally false of course.
I'm glad you met some nice ones though ^_^ Welcome to the group ne, dozo yoroshiku~ ^_^

most of the rest were loud and annoying. actually... i purposely wore my Shia costume (from Pita Ten) during the Jrock event w/ the EGL/EGA competition. The next day my friend and i wore our loli outfits. ^.^ that was fun.

maybe i'm just a bit... yeaaaah. o_O;;
but many ppl were kinda snobby and not really mean... but kinda impose that i didn't deserve to be there? (they would say, "So who/what are you supposed to be?") during the jrock event b/c i didnt "dress" in "jrock (or related)" for the event. err yah. the event itself was entertaining... but some of the people there. ~.~;;;;

Uhm, two friends and I went as Last Letter Kirito, Aiji, and Jun. I *figured* since I've seen soo many Pierrot "fans" online that people would recognize us... wrong. Nobody knew who we were, and when they did the whole big jrock group picture before the jrock event, someone came up to us and went, "You guys are supposed to be jrockers, right?" .. >_>
Of course when I cosplayed as Macabre Kyo the next day everyone knew, shallow if you ask me. And then when I went EGL on Sunday, everyone stared at me acting like I didn't have the right to dress EGL. Whatever, I don't forsee myself going back to AX because of all the shallow, rude people that I had to encounter with. -_- (and don't even get me started with the Duel Jewel concert on Saturday, thats an irrelevant topic) XD

The only people I'd ever be rude to (although I usually bite my tongue) are stupid and/or drunk men who ask if you're a hooker or something. But if anyone asks politely, I always explain, or if they compliment me I thank them... no need to be rude at all!
