hey hope everyone is well.. i decided i was going to make my own petticoat instead of purchasing one .. and my reasoning in how to do this was to make several circle skirts

<lj-cut text="using this method"> <IMG src="http://gothfashion.info/circlepixiefig1.gif" ?>

Letter B is the radius of the waste line and C is length of skirt. now, i know it won't be that simple, so i've already made one for my younger sister, had it altered a tad, and it turned out well. </lj-cut> after making around 6 or 7 skirts out of a white cotton material, i was thinking on adding a trim to each oneand perhaps a few skirts of tulle in between. I have most of the material, that won't be the problem. i thought i should ask all you advanced darlings for your opinions.

and would that work well? how many circle skirts should i make?

I'm no expert at petticoats, but that sounds awfully bulky and heavy to me. The petticoat I made for myself used petticoat netting (not tulle), and only has 3 layers and is very light, but still gives poof. It was 2 layers of netting, with gathered tiers, and one of fabric underneath, in the same pattern. I'm not saying your system won't work, but it sounds very.... heavy to me in my (not particularly professional) opinion ^^;

Well I hope you get it figured out just right for a perfect petticoat! Good luck : )

Humm... I have a petticoat with a similar pattern, and there's 2 'main' layers made of 2 layers each sewed together (which makes a total of 4 layers) it's made with extremely thin fabric though.. a bit like thoses see trough black fabric you see in some shirt (so that everyone can see your bra ;)) but the fabris is a bit more stiff like tulle (though it's definitly not tulle)
anyways all that to say, that the skirt is rather fluffy. So if you take into account that tulle will probably look bigger than the fabric of my petticoat, maybe 6 or 7 full circle layer of tulle will look too big...
I'm not a pro, but my advice would be one layer of cotton under and then one or two layer of tulle and then, if you'd like another layer of cotton. The important if you use tulle is to have a full layer of cotton underneath because tulle REALLY itches after a while... and you might have tulle printed into your legs if you sit for too long -___-;;

Circle skirts aren't good for gothic lolita clothes... they hang the wrong way, and panniers don't look so good under them. Try looking back through this communities archives for more information on gathered skirts, because they are easier to make and use less fabric than circle skirts, and look better to boot.

Here is one example

well, I use to starch mine evey time I wshed it, but sinvce I have worn mine so much and washed it several times (stupid clubs filled with cigarette smoke) it's beyond starching. My petticoat is about 1,5 yers old...so i think it has hold up pretty well considering it was a late night before an event job ;)

The hard truth is that tulle or netting does loose stiffness when you wash it if it's not drycleaned. But i don't have the money to dry clean mine since I use it very often :)
