Feb. 24th, 2004 12:22 pmI'm so excited, I just paid for this pattern from EBay!

It's #324 Authentic Pattern, Inc. which I haven't seen in a lot of local shops. Pretty rare, at least. it's a square-dancing dress pattern.
I have dove gray cotton as the main color (I like dk grey cause it photographs better than black). What does everybody think about velvet for trimmings? Or colored lace? (I have brocades in teal blue and burgundy I've been hoarding)
OK, that's it really, I'm just really excited to get started on it...

Date: 2004-02-24 09:43 pm (UTC)I'm not into teal in general for anything elegant gothic... maybe the burgundy. I think plain white lace could work... or baby pink. I think gray always looks nice trimmed with baby pink.

I think velvet might look a little too heavy for the dress.. :/
no?

Date: 2004-02-25 08:10 pm (UTC)I'm a beg-intermediate in sewing and I absolutely suck at altering patterns. :oP
...won't look exactly like a square dance dress
hehe, don't worry, changes are in order. I'm definitely changing the sleeves to be longer. I was even thinking of making an apron for it or sewing on some crosses/coffins to the skirt.

Date: 2004-02-25 08:27 pm (UTC)the skirt would be very large and not look 'flat' like egl dresses tend to look (a sq skirt (http://www.dancerduds.com/funfancy/2962.jpg) vs egl skirt (http://www.limebarb.com/store/egl/aliceset/01.jpg))
i don't know if you understand >_<
As for how to do it, i'm definetly not a pro when it comes to sewing, but the sd pattern will probably be a full circle skirt (like the pattern showed in the entry about making a petticoat (http://www.livejournal.com/community/egl/668357.html)) so, to tone it down, you could make it less large instead of a full 380 degree. Try cutting it by half or 1/3, it depends on your need, just test it out by pinning pieces of fabric together, if you'd like.
I did the opposite for a red hood costume last halloween (made a full circle skirt from a less large skirt pattern) and it was very easy to do, so I don't think you'll have any problems with it even if you're a beg-intermediate with sewing :)
By the way i think the appron is the cutest idea ever!! <3
