corset/leather question
Feb. 20th, 2004 03:56 pm
I have a similar corset as the pix. But, with higher polish and more dramatic waist. I've had it a while for clubbing/halloween/parades/Burning Man. I'd like to incorporate it to my EGL-dom since I invested a good chunk on it, but it seems too harsh and sexy. I mean, the reason I love EGL is the innocence and cuteness of it all. So beautiful and subtle, y'know?
Be honest! Cause I'm having reservations about it myself...
[Poll #251856]
What's the proper EGL way for this? Any suggestions?

But the idea is to pile on the EGL so the corset is less noticeable?

Well, the bibles tells me so.

Date: 2004-02-21 09:46 pm (UTC)Ok I have to admit that some sort of bodice/light corset made of matte leather is quite moi-meme. But not tight corsets only worn as bodice, you know.
But on the other hand, shiny leather/pvc corsets are NOT EGL. Especially not worn tightly. You know, I love corsets but not combined with EGL.
NeoGothic on the other hand, is ok with shiny pvc garments. ^^

Date: 2004-02-21 02:27 am (UTC)I don't really think that leather with a high gloss or PVC fit into the stric definitions of GL and EGL, but of course, if you are going out clubbing, you can combine them for your own style of lolita.

Date: 2004-02-21 09:47 am (UTC)Corset style *can* be worn with EGL, *if* you mean Elegant Gothic Lolita the way Mana means it and not as a catch-all for Lolita/Gothic Lolita. Elegant Gothic Lolita (Moitie-style) is NOT very innocent or cute so you can incorporate some more mature elements into the style.
But having said that, the way it's usually done is by making the "corset" look more like a high waistband than a real corset, and keeping the body silhouette relatively slim instead of exaggerating the curves. A better name for Moitie "corsets" is "wide belt" because they have NO cinching power. And their starting size is so big that I've never been able to buy one (although I would really like to) because I cannot lace them small enough to stop them being *loose and floppy*. They're not meant to pull the waist in; the skirts they're worn with flare, but are not poufy; and the blouses fit closely enough that they don't puff out the bust. So although you might see the lace-up thing on the waist and automatically think "curves!", in fact the bust/waist/hip ratio with this look is somewhat less than in many normal Lolita poufy-skirt styles.
I have a skirt corset that verges on EGL-ness from Excentrique. (I posted a picture in a post here (http://www.livejournal.com/community/egl/643572.html) not too long ago) The silhouette *looks* really curvy in pictures but I do next to nothing to enhance the curves. I wear it with drawers (for modesty) but no petticoat to keep the skirt from being too exaggerated, and the corset itself only cinches 1 inch tighter than my natural waist. If I wore a petticoat and puffy shirt, and tightened the corset more than that (assuming I could), it would be like a can-can dancer. ^^;
Anyway, this got really long so I'll just say...
If you wear a tight corset, minimize the skirt poufiness.
If you want to wear poufy skirts, either don't wear a corset or wear it loosely.
(and if the corset has boob cups, forget it... ^^)

Date: 2004-02-21 07:19 pm (UTC)If you want to wear one with Gothic lolita (not EGL) maybe wear a corset that has some frills at the bottom (like this: http://www.le-ciela.com/page/ab-shop-dress-5.html or this: http://www.le-ciela.com/page/ab-shop-dress-4.html) over a skirt. Overbust corsets tend to work best with most lolita outfits because underbust corsets make you look like a barmaid/cancan dancer.
(Can you tell I'm in awe of Antique Beast right now? I love those corsets!)
(Of course, you can just ignore my advice. I don't mind, I'm not good at giving advice anyway.)
