Is the Gothic Lolita style dying down in Japan?

If so, what's next?

Let's discuss!

Well, I don't live in Japan and I've never been so I really can't say. But there's such a wide range of styles in all the different Japanese brands I see. So I think it's diversifying. ^_^

Hi~ just drop by~
i will keep it simple since i don't belong in here(and please...i have terrible spelling and grammar..please forgive me)

I was a lolita...then i become kogal...and then i become kawaiigo...and now back to lolita,so i discover this group.

I don't live in japan...but i am closely linked with the asian trend.

From what i see, there is a "Americanize","high-end fashion" trend now.

It means "kawaii" and "gorgeous"
A style getting popular the the past 6~12 month

Most people won't have any interest in it, because it is like a conservative style for late teens. When gals..or not gals(most of them)..enter collage/university they will change to this style.

A very little part or Vivi...but mainly JJ

If you are looking for a ture kawaiigo( what i call them) look for JJ bis...a magazine which features girls from 17~24. These teenagers are mostly "rich","elegant". Those girls are from wealthy families.
This kawaiigo trend is very hard to fallow, because even if you have the money to buy the clothes, the attitude of "elegant" and "grace" is important.

The clothing part ...I guess it is the easist part of all, because kawaiigo like imported brands such as juicy courture, tommy girl, armani exchange,dior,chanel...etc. Chanel or Hermes or Dior bag and accessories are must have. And also there is a clothing rule--> nothing too eye catching that ruins the elegant appearence, but it has to be young and stylish as well.

For makeup and hair do's, natural makeup always works..and hair the "authentic" kawaiigo likes curly hair. They have a special way to set up the hair style with a hot iron or hair curler. However, in the past 12 monthes...different hair styles are getting popular (tokyo likes straight, kansai likes curly..etc)

Now...kawaiigo can be classify as different style of kawaiigo too.... if you are interested, I can post those style and their related brands (this post is getting too long)

I am sorry to share my minimal knowledge on japanese fashion.

I quit reading cutie/zipper 5 years ago...so i don't know much about the style features in these magazines. But still, I belive those people in cutie/zipper call themselves "oshare kids". It is a trend starting from roughly around year 99 (that's why i quit reading these magazines). From what i know, they are like a new trend of harajuku style...mix and match and dig their clothes from stylish unique boutique in daikanyama.

for the takuya angel style ...I think they are just one style spring up form those unique ,mix and match like decola does. Since japanese people are veyr proud of their culture. It is reasonable to see those people desgin and dress in that style .

^^.......I am so glad that to like "milk,"emily temple"...etc

Those are sweet lolita...beleive it or not,and that is what i dress now. Those sweet lolita most people know about are just too "costume-like". These brands we are talking about are like...the ancient lolita. I tihnk they are the first brands that has lolita-related designs.

About fashion magazines... I pefer some highschool girl magazine such as "nicola", "melon"...etc .Since they are for younger girls, their clothes are more colorful and cute.

I am so glad to meet someone share the same fashion taste as i do^^(nice to meet you)

I don't think there is a magzine on sweet lolita...after mana's brand appears...people's attention aim at gothic lolitas. There are more and more brands set up for gothic/lolita. then, several types of lolita started to disappear...(kaneko,cyber...etc).As u might know now, people only know sweet, classic ,gothic lolita. What we like is not that popular nowadays.

as i mention before...it is better to look for these cute brands from teen magazines...kera is too "popular" to feature those cute brands...I think they end up feature more gothic/punk stuff now(camparing to before)...i think zipper got some milk, jane marple stuff too....

Because there are fewer and fewer visual bands, many people aren't inspired to dress up anymore. I believe the whole EGL style peaked in the late 90's.

Yeah, Dir en grey's toned down their image from what I've heard and there's not too many left. Didn't L'arc en ciel break up last year or was that Luna Sea?

Date: 2004-01-16 01:00 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bijuarukei.livejournal.com
That's true about Dir en grey, but it was Luna Sea that split up in 2000. L'Arc was never visual kei in the traditional sense, so they don't really count in the whole J-rockers-toning-down trend.

Music's kind of like it, but appearance wise, yeah. My bad. ^_^() I think I was thinking of Lareine or Kagrra.

Even if it is dying down, we still have many designers that continue to make more and more clothes. As long as companies like Baby and Metamorphose, as well as all those smaller homemade brands like Antique Beast are around, I don't think anyone should worry too much. And some brands like Atelier Boz seem to be evolving with the times.

Because the West is usually a couple of seasons behind Japan in fashion trends, perhaps we will have either some of the Japanese designers to branch out to the states, where the want for EGL clothes may be greater. How great would it be to have a Baby, Metamorphose, or h.Naoto in a place like New York City?

Fashion changes with the times, but I have faith that a timeless style such as EGL will last a bit longer.

Exactly! And you know the great thing? People will still dress up EGL even when it does go out of style. One thing I've noticed about Japan is that there's just a fearless attitude about clothes. They where what they feel like wearing, and if there's a trend, great. If there's not, whatever. Just an observation though. Could be wrong. I doubt EGL would definitely die out as a whole. It'll probably come back in a bit when it does.

^_^ Then I stand corrected!

Je ne sais pas. I've only read so much and haven't been to the country yet, but it may be a course to study in college. ::shrug::

I don't know... Alice Auaa was considering branching to the US a bit ago. h.Naoto's parent company owns a club or something in Israel. h.Naoto's webpage also has a buisness page which is interesting.

Probably not Baby or Metamorphose, but perhaps more of the Gothic brands, because there is a demand here in the States for that already.

I get a lot of issues of the japanese magazine Kera and they still show people dressed egl. I think the prevailing trend is now a more punk look with ripped clothing and died hair. They have street snaps of people and the looks definately vary though.

I wouldn't say that it's dying out.
I would say it's becoming like the American Rave scene.
The American Rave scene used to be a really cool comfortable place to be... then it got popular and mainstream. Everywhere you went sold UFO's, glowsticks, and neon babydoll tees. Then the people who were into it in the firstplace felt as though the whole thing was ruined by people who really didn't understand and who were just doing what was popular. I think the same thing is happening to EGL in Japan. Look at all the really popular anime shows that have come out on Japanese television in the last couple of seasons... there's frequently at least one EGL chick. Chii in Chobits is extremely EGL although it is about 2 years old now. But more recently.... Take Sister Princess RePure for example. There's a couple of Egl girls in that and that series is huge. D.C. also has a bit of that... there's a girl in Ai Yori Aoshi that's egl influenced. In Megami Magazine a couple months ago there was a feature on a voice actress and they has a picture of her and she was dresses EGL... in fact a lot of the voice actresses dress that way... not all of them, but enough. So like I said... I don't think it's dying out... it's just getting diluted by mainstream culture.

Please excuse my mistakes there... That should have been

"In Megami Magazine a couple months ago there was a feature on a voice actress and they had a picture of her and she was dressed EGL..."

Sorry about that.

i think this is true of every culture that becomes popular

From: [identity profile] missmeganmaude.livejournal.com
I most certainly agree with that.
I used the American Rave scene because it was really recent and a prime example. However, it can definitely be said that the same thing happened to goth culture in the late 90's and the same thing is happening to punk now.
Kind of sad isn't it?

Date: 2004-01-16 04:16 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lazyangel.livejournal.com
it is sad... but hey, it gives us 'old-timers' a reason to be snobby ^_~

seriously though, i've had many a 'scene' go popular on me, and it's pretty frustrating. i think a lot of the backlash (higher than thou attitudes, touchiness, etc) we see from scenes going popular is because the oldtimers are resentful and the new comers become so as well.

*nod nod* I <3 flame wars because they tear you down for anything. As much as possible.

About the post:

1) I don't think EGL will die out, honestly, not yet, anyway. And what goes around comes around in the fashion world. Right now, late 80s is back where I live. 0-0;

2) I tried once, but I failed miserably. I think it's all in your eye-shape. Honestly, I would give up if I didn't have almond-shaped eyes. ^^;;; Try it out, though. There was a link once to someone who had a Mana-makeup tutorial. *lost link* Maybe if someone knows it, it can help you.

A lot of the G&L brands have been around since the early 90's. When I look at magazines like fruits and kera I see a lot of kids dressed in baggy "new wave 80's" clothes. Japan has so many ever changing fashion trends, remember kogals?

KoGals!!! i was juist looking them up yesterday .__.

The kogals trend is still very, very alive. I was just in Japan last week and have NEVER seen so many roaming the streets. It was quite shocking, because I thought it was going away too.

[non-LiveJournal-owner Sumire delurking--Hi folks]

I think the fact that they're continuing to publish the Gothic & Lolita Bible and sewing books proves that EGL is still hanging in there, but I agree that it's going a bit mainstream. Or maybe not exactly "mainstream"--it's not that everybody wears lace and crosses now, but it's that there are more EGL girls outside of Harajuku now--they're not an unusual sight in Ikebukuro anymore, and I stumbled across a shop selling some of the EGLBible brands in a really humdrum Saitama suburb, and even in the dirtbag boondock town where I lived until last year, I started seeing EGL girls just before I left.

In addition to the media sightings mentioned earlier (Chobits, etc.), I'd like to cite Kaori Yuki's "God Child" manga as a big source of mainstream influence. I want to say that her God Child fashions are more directly off-the-streets-of-Harajuku, with the platform Mary Janes and tiny hats and whatnot, whereas her earlier Earl Cain manga felt more authentically Victorian, but then again, maybe that's just because I didn't know about EGL/EGA fashion back when I read her earlier works. In fact, when I read Gokinjo Monogatari back in 1996, it never even occurred to me that there was anybody else in Japan who dressed like Pi-chan. I thought Yazawa-sensei made it up. :)

[whew--sorry for the long post.]

Well I think you guys have wrong thought.
Gothic Lolita fashion is not a trend.
That is maniac fashion. Underground fashion. Indies fashion.
That's not dying out as Kogal fashion, or any other trends.
If you dress Gothic lolita as such mind, you can't be the real loilta player.
