Well, I was replying to another post here on EGL and springing from that thread and the replies to it, and idea came to mind. A personalized Gothic, Lolita, Aristocrat, Dandy, and Kodona fashion tips session! ^.^
People who would like to participate should post to this thread with a picture of themselves in everyday clothing, and give a general description of the genre that you like to wear, and maybe say what points you'd particularly like some tips on when it comes to your style, body type, colour scheme, etc.
Then, others on the list could post in reply and give their tips and ideas between one another. ^.^ I see posts on occasion that *sort* of act as this, for one individual, but I thought it would be fun to have an entire thread event dedicated to it. Just one big idea swapping session.
^.^ I'll start out, since I'm posting the thread.
http://www.geocities.com/lapierrot_desang/liltokyode.jpg (Sorry, Geocities is evil, please cut and paste the link to view.)
This is my everyday me, pretty much. My hair is longer now though, it hits about shoulder length, but not much else has changed. I dress mostly EGA, Dandy Goth, and occasionally BxB EGL. I'm definitely of the Mana following camp. ^.^ Mostly my issues stem from my height and long *everything* and my decidedly un-kawaii features. (Now don't think I'm being self depreciating, people have told me I'm pretty and I agree most of the time, but I'm decidedly not "cute." My features are rather grown up, I think, not childish or cutesy at all.)
Now, have at! Either give me your ideas of what would best suit me, and maybe what I should try to avoid, or post your own image for clothing/make up/what ever tips! Please try to be nice when giving suggestions or criticisms though, we don't want any hurt feelings!

Date: 2003-12-14 11:05 pm (UTC)You look like you have the perfect frame to pull of the sexy and sophisticated EGA (unlike me with my round moon-pie face >.<).
I'm sure you've been here, but this lil' lady has a TERRIFIC tutorial on Mana make up:
http://manawannabe.hk.st/
I tried putting on the make up... It's hard, but rewarding if you do it well. My big problem was the false eyelashes. My, oh my, oh my.....
I have tons of designs for tall women. Just tell me the style you like best, and it's yours. ^_^
what is your height, anyhow?
M~
Re: Mana Wannabe and others
Date: 2003-12-14 11:48 pm (UTC)And I avoid false lashes like the plague! Not only do they never look natural or really all that pleasing to me, but they're difficult to put on and uncomfortable to wear, so I've never felt they were worth the pain. T.T
As for height, I'm 5'10" or 'round about. My height never seems to measure quite the same at any given point. What's really the trouble is my long legs. I have an inseam of 34" while most ladies pants I believe have a maximum of about 30~32" and an outseam of 45" where skirts seem to tend to fall around 41~43". Also, my arms are very long, 24", and I prefer sleeve cuffs to spill over on top of my hands.
I sent my measurements to a seamstress once to have a coat made and she questioned me about the arm measurements because she was afraid the sleeves would turn out too long for what I gave her, but I persisted, telling her the measurement was right, and when the coat arrived... ah, bliss! Finally, sleeves that looked *right!* not awkward! \^_____________^/
Some times I find it difficult to always be EGA though. There seems to be a seriousness of attitude required to add the right atmosphere to the outfit, and some times I just feel like a bouncy idiot, in which case it seems like a shorter, flouncier skirt would be more appropriate. But these usually just don't work with my height. *Sigh*
And finally, do any of you other tall girls out there have this problem: I love platform shoes, I love to tower and be tall, I'm actually rather proud of my height and don't mind not being really the type to pull of anything close to Sweet Lolita, but I do have one *major* issue: Boys! My height seems to be a real deterrent to my date-ability rating, guys just get so intimidated by how tall I am, and when I wear anything other than flat shoes I hit at least 6 foot or taller and suddenly I'm at eye level or towering over all the guys around me.
At first most of them say it's not an issue, but then now and then they'll whine about our height difference or chide me for wearing platforms. Most the time it sounds jovial when they do it, but some times I think it really does do something to their egos, and thus their willingness to go out with me... I'm especially worried that this is going to be a problem when I go to Japan... What should I do...? Is there anything I *can* do? I certainly can't shrink. どういたせばよろしいでしょうかなぁ~...
Re: Mana Wannabe and others
Date: 2003-12-15 12:10 am (UTC)I'm 6' flat-footed, & adore high heels (can comfortably walk in 5 1/2" w/o platforms... one of these days I *will* have a pair of ballet boots, darnit!). My fiance is 5'9", & usually wears tabi. Any boi who's intimidated by height isn't worth your time. :}
Re: Mana Wannabe and others
Date: 2003-12-15 12:17 am (UTC)As far as i know, you will be a bit hit in Japan...you'll stand out a lot, but your 'look' is crazy popular attractive to a majority over there.
Re: Mana Wannabe and others
Date: 2003-12-15 12:44 am (UTC)I think that you should try EGL in Mana's way. He's not a short bouncy girl but a tall and slender man. Try a all-black outfit. Knee-length skirt, fitting blouse and do not be afraid of wearing high mary janes like Mana. Oh, better you do whatever you're feeling that you're comfortable doing so. But I just thought that EGL in Mana's style would be a way for tall and slender girls to be able to wear EGL clothes. Look at some Moi-Même-Moitié pieces and maybe you find something acceptable?
Re: Mana Wannabe and others
Date: 2003-12-15 12:51 am (UTC)I get a lot of flack for it, but I get a lot of flack for being tall when I'm wearing flat shoes. I figure why not go all out.
People come up to me out of nowhere and say things like "You're tall".
As if somehow I didn't know and they thought they would do me the favor of informing me. Go figure.
My boyfriend is 5'7" if you're rounding up and he loves it when I wear platforms. *shrugs*
I think the best thing to do is to be proud of yourself and your graceful height and just tell people who don't like it to piss off. ^___~
As for being egl as opposed to ega...
I myself tend to take a Mana-esque midland road. (See here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/electroncat/4052.html) and here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/electroncat/3079.html))
Simpler, cleaner designs tend to work better for the larger girl I think. It's a fine line between what makes us taller girls look cute and what makes us look like frill-monsters.
I haven't seen your picture because geocities sucks and ran out of bandwidth for you, but I'm sure you could get away with a cutesier egl look... I mean I do. ^___~
Re: Mana Wannabe and others
Date: 2003-12-15 01:46 am (UTC)The jumper skirt is actually a mutilated evening dress from J.C. Penny that I bought (already mutilated) from a vintage store on Melrose Avenue, and the blouse from... probably the same store, just a no-name label on that one though. Plus the parasol from.... MmM! ^.^ I think that outfit looks pretty good on me, and you can't see it, but I'm wearing the black BtSSB copy shoes from Hot Topic. (God bless them for that at least, Baby is never going to carry a size 10!) Not very high soles, but... Look at me tower over my friends T___T
Re: Mana Wannabe and others
Date: 2003-12-15 02:15 am (UTC)I'm glad you like it!
I did indeed make the grey outfit. ^___^
I made the dress, bloomers, headpiece, neckpiece, and pannier that I'm wearing underneath.
I was really proud of the headpiece since it was specially made for the ears on the wig to poke through. I made the ears and sewed them to the wig back awhile ago and I wanted to use it to do an egl catgirl for Halloween.
As for the HT mary janes...
I love those shoes!
I have them in a size 11, but they're just ever so slightly too small for me. Curse my big feets!
Re: Mana Wannabe and others
Date: 2003-12-15 02:41 am (UTC)but i think being tall is definitely a good thing - we're in supermodel land! :D and i get a lot of people telling me they wish they were tall so i think myself lucky ^^
since i'm blonde i go for the punky alice gothic lolita look:
a fitted shirt or a putomayo style top, a black floofy skirt which sits just above the knee, black knee socks, and chunky 2 and half inch mary janes (i really need to learn to walk in that 5 inch pair i got ages ago! ^^;;;)

Date: 2003-12-15 06:16 am (UTC)I also have height issues with men, or rather, with one particular man. Out of all the guys I could get together with, & then get engaged to, who is totally my soulmate, has to be 6'6". Typical, eh? If I put my arm round his waist, my arm is out horizontally. I would love to walk arm in arm like other couples, but I would dislocate my shoulder.

Date: 2003-12-15 09:39 am (UTC)First off, in your icon picture, is that the mother from the American version of The Ring? My friend and I were debating about that....
So if you like the more EGA / Dandy look, you are in luck! You can shop at pretty much any store in the US and find pieces to put together. Express is one of my favorite stores for long skirts, cute pants and tops. If I was more of the EGA / Dandy type, I'd be all about most of the stuff I see there (as it is, I still buy a lot from them, but wear it to my own taste).
If you go to http://www.expressfashion.com and look on their "decked out section, the Assymetrical Blouse and Editor Pants are a great start. (Too bad their website doesn't have half the cool stuff they have in stores)
Check out places like Wet Seal and Rave if you are on a budget. On the rack or even in the store, it may not *look* like your type, but imagine it on you, in your style and without the multi-colored striped top / bottom they have it pictured with.
Stick with pants or assymetrical skirts, and pick up some nice funky collared shirts and blouses.
From the picture, you would definately look cute (not just pretty, but definately cute too!) in the more "punk" style. This is great because you can mix and match *anything* pretty much. I think it would definately suit you, especially because of your height!
A few do-nots I have are get rid of the white contacts. To quote my best friend "They don't look good on Marilyn Manson, they definately don't look good on you." I know they're kinda cool and trendy, but they really just make you look unattractive (at least in that picture).
And don't be afraid of makeup. Spend the money and go into a MAC store (Macy's also sells MAC) and pick up their Studio Fix. Don't let them sell you a shade that will make you more "bronze" (mine did, and damn, theywould not relent!) but don't go too pale either. Ask them to match your current skin tone, and try one shade lighter OR darker, any one of those 3 you should be quite happy with.
Eyeliner is a great friend, but don't go crazy. Until you get good at it, please don't draw funky squigglies on your face. I always laugh at people who do that, and do it poorly. Just around the top of the eye, and get a smudge stick to go underneath your eye. If you are not experienced with makeup (or even if you have been doing it since you were 13!) spend the money and buy at least one of the books by Kevin Aucoin: Face Forward or Making Faces. They are my essential friend when wanting to do something more than average with my face.
That's me! ^_________^
Date: 2003-12-15 03:48 pm (UTC)After that though, I’m not in luck. Shopping at any ol’ store in the U.S. is still difficult because of my height. I bought a pair of pants from Express once in the “tall” size, and had to let down the cuff by 3” to make them hit me at a decent length. Luckily they had a very fat cuff at the bottom of the leg. Plus I find most of the clothing just in the stores doesn’t quite work out for my style, it just looks too plain… Pants, and men’s dress-shirts are an exception, but most the time I find it’s more to my advantage to just save up and either buy a custom made article from an online store, or get the fabric and make the garment myself. Especially skirts, skirts are never long enough. They always hit me some where above the ankles when I want them to be sweeping about my feet. *Sigh*
As for Punk… I’m not really the Punk type. This probably stems from the fact that I don’t really have an interest in the punk movement, especially not how it exists today. Now there’s a fashion that actually is supposed to have a whole life style behind it when you wear it, Punk was a fecking political statement when it started out.
To quote Kyo though, “(I) often get asked if (I) like Marilyn Manson. (I) don’t care about Marilyn Manson, and personally I personally don’t like what he does.” He wasn’t the first and is hardly the only one to ever wear white out contact lenses. They are something that looks better in person, in motion, than on camera, however I think this picture: http://www.geocities.com/dir_morgenstern/vkgeisha.jpg is better for me wearing the contacts, and it shows one of my make-ups that I like to do. ^_^ I’ve gotten more compliments on my white-out contact lenses than complaints though, so you’ll have to forgive me if it’s a do-not that I continue to do.
I’m certainly not afraid of make-up at all, though I do agree with you on the eye-liner doodling, for the most part. The only time I do anything like that is when I draw on the Third-Eye design sported by the albino priestess in X -1999- (drawn smaller though). I think that one looks good, especially with a jewel or bindi set in for the center of the eye. Thanks for the references to those books though, I know a friend of mine purchased one a while back, I should ask her if she still has it and then I can get even more ideas for different make up styles.

Date: 2003-12-16 08:03 am (UTC)And wow, if you ever go to an anime con, you gotta cosplay as the mom from the Ring. That would rock.
