I was talking about this with my friend, and just wanted to see what everyone else's opinion was. So, my question is, what is your view on wearing a petticoat as a skirt? Yes, no, hell no?

What is wrong with a two layer crinoline and a thong? :D It's one of my favorite types of outfits! But then again, it's more for when I'm out clubbing or promoting my radio show ^_~

Of course! Petticoats make absolutely beautiful skirts!

i think it depends with how the petticoat looks. if it has a big waistbandy thing [usually so you dont get itchy with the tulle-y bits' then no..] because one looks unready when going out of the house.

If it is like a tutu, full fruffy e.t.c and not transparent/sheer [as stated above] sure... and i've down it multiple times... but it somehow looks more complete with a thin overlay of cotton circle skirt or something.. and that doesnt even have to cover all of the length of the skirt

i think it also depends on the style you ar trying to acheive.
ballerina vs sweet lolita.

^ sure ^ out of the question..it's like
..walking aorund in
your undergarnments
[from what i'd imagine it would look like]

By that line of thinking, nobody should wear a corset on the outside of their clothes, either. ;}

i think your line of thinking has deviated from my point of intention.

The special corsets made for wearing as the outerwear are different from the ones you wear inside.. www.galleryserpentine.com.au

Depdning on the type of corset and the lok you are going for as i also stated above ne ? =n.n=

I think that by taking a quote from my comment you have taken away apart of what it was from and hence led you twist my words. but no matter it is sorted now, ne?
=n.n=

[on a more less lolita note.. to make a terrible analogy "i dont like xolian-raced aliens...when they have no manners when talking to people."

You have made it to simply: "i dont like xolian-raced aliens" and hence, cut out the very important things... it's propaganda scheming i tell ya!! :D

yes i also said "i think it depends with how the petticoat looks"...hence...as with corset.

Quite possibly. It would be difficult to say from this end, however, since I find it excruciatingly difficult to follow your train of ill-communicated thought. ;}

no actually i think i made myself plenty clear =n.n=

all i wanted to state was, what you said was pretty much what i already covered- and hence, pre-rebutted [ fromt the word/prefix pre- and rebut... check www.dictionary.com if you do understand these words]

Well i guess you are just one of the few people that just dont have the gift of understanding.

Eeh.. Im gonna give it a no. There is one exception though I've seen, Metamorphose Temps de Fille did this skirt that could double as a petticoat, but other than that I'm kind of like "behh.." Only cause so many are just.. see-through-ish tulle and netting ya know? o.o
Yeah.. kind of like walking around in your undies. XD; *nod*

As stated above, it depends on the petticoat. I think a white petticoat with a sheer asymmetrical skirt w/ lace trim would look awesome.

I'm sure if you can pull it off, then go for it. I saw this French movie that took place in Japan where one of the girls was wearing an orange petticoat for a skirt. I guess whatever you want to go for.

^_^ It was pretty good, granted not amazing, but cool. It was an English dub though so it was a bit weird. I didn't watch the whole thing since I was flipping back and forth, but it was cool. BTW, is that Rei in your icon from MARS?

There we go! I didn't know how to best phrase Masao's characterization, but that was it. He didn't really fit with the polt, and wrapping up his character seemed very rushed.

Rei's awesome, but as we started to move into the drama and relationship and away from them (he and Kira) individually, I sort of got turned off. Still a great story! ^_^

Volume 15 was definitely disappointing and towards the end, it seemed rushed and last minute remembering that the characters had other interests aside from each other. She handled the situations well though and it could have very quickly turned into cliche, but she pulled it off.

Hmm, I've worn a petticoat as a skirt, but not with an EGL outfit (a white tight t-shirt, and white net petticoat), more of a ballerina look I think ^^; As other people have said here, I think it would probably look better with a ballerina-ey outfit than EGL, but that's just me thinking of my petticoat- yours is probably much nicer ^^; (that's what I get for making my own... heeh)

Um, hell no! It's like walking around in your underpantsO_o;; Although I'm not sure if you're referring just to a petticoat or a pannier, because although both of them are designed to be worn under other skirt, there is a difference. Moi-meme-Moitie released a "tutu skirt" which looked like a really over-done pannier to be worn as outerwear... but if it was just one that was made for puffing our your skirt, it's not really appropriate!

What's the difference between a petticoat and a pannier?

Date: 2003-12-11 12:27 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] zoloft.livejournal.com
Y'know, I'm really curious about this, myself. O_o

In my world (which, granted, is more grounded in historic re-enactment garb/period costume; & Western goth, new romantic & neo-victorian fashion than it is in "true Japanese egl"), a "crinoline" is either the sort of cage-thing inside a hoop skirt (rather an archaic definition) or, more commonly, the shorter, usually "poofier" version of a petticoat. A "pannier" on the other hand, is either a basket sort of contraption or a series of pillow-like things strapped about the waist to add bulk to both sides of the skirt but not all the way 'round like a hoop-skirt or crinoline would (think of the late 18th century, where upper-class ladies at formal occaisions would have to enter a doorway sideways if the building weren't equipped with wide double-doors).

From: [identity profile] seeinglife.livejournal.com
See, that's how I'm used to thinking of it too! So I'm a bit at a loss for the difference in the EGL world...

If you're talking a petticoat that's cottony like this (the aforementioned Metamorphose one), sure.
If you're talking the meshy rather see through type, eh, depends. If you're going for a sort of gothic (black or red) or FRUiTSy (white or bright colors) ballerina look, it'd be ok with something underneath so you're not showing off your panties. If you're going for something kinderwhorish, you could get away with nothing underneath but undies if it were the square dancing kind with the long waist panel that *almost* covers your butt, since you'd be trying to be a bit whorish. If you wore it over a pair of pants or another skirt that was deconstructed or just a simple skirt in a matching color underneath, maybe for punky lolita. For traditional EGL, I would have to say no, it's not fitting.

Depends on the outfit, really. :}

If you're trying to follow the example of the "True Lolita" I would say no.

On the other hand, if you're trying to dress yourself w/o the aid of a handful of foreign subcultural fashion mags, I would say yes. :D

Y'know... in case you couldn't tell... ;D

yeah.. a cotton petticoat might work for EGL... because the teirs would just look like an average skirt... (maybe)... it would all be judgement..

otherwise, not for EGL.. although something that would look great (for a punky lolita) would be a skirt thats ripped apart, so that some of the petticoat peaks through..

Hey, look, it's me in this picture (in the pink) (http://pic4.picturetrail.com/VOL56/696826/1863952/26697026.jpg)

I say it looks damn cute if done right. And with the right style, it can be rather, EGA. Ma/Mam released a line of black crinolines that are made out of a very nice organza.

A picture of me in said skirt w/ corset from Victoria's Secret and head piece from BtSSB" (http://www.digitalmegami.com/photos/necropolis/cali1.jpg)

And please, do not think I am calling myself EGL or EGA, this is just *me* dressing up in the things I enjoy (don't worry leatherkings, this comment is directed at a few girls who aren't happy with me ^_~).

Ohhh.. I have a very nice white petticoat that isn't sheer and has a ruffly trim at each layer. It was a double layer and was just HUGE so I divided it into two separate petticoats - one for me and one for my daughter. Now that it's not quite so huge and square dance looking, I sometimes wear it with a dark apron and it looks awfully cute.

When I get my driver for my USB port, I'll be able to upload some pictures.

I think it depends on the style you're going for. If you're trying ot make a traditional egl outfit then that seems like a very wrong thing to do no matter what you're wearing under it. If you're going for a more unique, americanized version of egl then maybe, if you're not trying ot be egl at all and just want a gothic, cute, fun or unique outfit then go for it because I think threre is nothing wrong with that.

Depends on the style of petticoat, what it's made of, & where you're wearing it. I'm surprised at the people just saying "No, you can't wear a petticoat as outerwear" without asking about the styles ( though if I've missed the post saying what style it was then I apologize). I've been in a store more than once in the past & not known whether a particular garment was under- or outerwear. Plus, what's the style? I have a ruffled knee length tiered, layered tutu-style petticoat skirt. It would be very egl, except that it's ever so slightly see through, so I only wear it at night, & not as a proper egl outfit. During the day I just wear it underneath. I also have a black lacetrimmed pencil skirt. I'm positive it's outerwear & the material is thick enough, but something about the lace trim makes me wonder if it's not just a thick petticoat. I don't worry about it though - I just wear it as both! *grin*

Just do what feels right to you!
