this is almost undoubtedly a totally un-pc question, but I've been awake eating sweets for far too long, feel very fat, and I don't care anymore.

what do you consider the "perfect" (if such a thing ever existed, which it doesn't) body-type for the various gosuloli styles? personally, I think you should be short and slightly rounded to be a sweet loli, and very tall and skinny to be an EGA, but I don't know if I'm just being a body facist again...

well I think the perfect lolita should fit the thought of a young girl slender short almost like a young boy (in that she has not developed) that is the most seen one's but the fetish type likes the more big boobs but still looks like a little girl. The world may never know lol

Well. Concidering the bouts of depression that come from relazing the ONLY style Anyone is going to think I suit is the buxom valkryie over bearing tall viking type.
Fuck that.
There is no *perfect* figure/height/age except a healthy fit one.
Otherwise you're just reusing old stereo types that don't do anyone any good.

...Why even ask? You know all the J-rock fangirls are just going to tell you "Mana-sama is the perfect lolita."

Not that I agree. I don't think there is a 'perfect' lolita, everyone big, small, short, tall, lanky, petite, whatever can be lolita. :D

I'd rather not get in to this whole 'trying to measure up' to the perfection besides just the outfits/accessories/hair/makeup, which I think has enough pressure for perfection already without trying to be the right body type or whatever. I guess if you wanted to go with what people try to aspire to as a 'perfect lolita' is fitting into the brands, but that's just not nice. Not all of us can be Japanese sized.
WATCH ME TRY TO CUT 5" OFF MY LEGS!

You also have to keep in mind that not all really short girls (I'm 4'11") are Japanese skinny, either. A lot of stuff fits me, as in, it's actually the proper length, but can I get it over my hips? Ha ha. I might be an extra small by American standards, but over in Japan Land, I am a large.

For EGL, I think short and thin is the best. Obviously it helps in the young look, and is generally what most people relate to cute. That, and the authentic clothing is made with small girls in mind.

For EGA, taller and developed.

There is no right body type for Lolita IMHO; any body can be the perfect body if you understand the style and how to dress yourself. Looking good has nothing to do with what kind of body you have, because even the most perfect body you can dream of will look awful if it's dressed in clothes that don't fit or match or suit that body type.

If you look in the street snaps sections of the G&L magazines, there's all sorts of body types displayed, from small, young-looking girls to taller, thin, mature-looking types, to downright chubby. They aren't included in the magazine because they have the perfect body, but because they dress well enough to exemplify the style.

well, "perfection" is an unattainable concept. and you know what they say, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". while some people will root for thin, others prefer some chub, and have the arguments to back up why that is what they like. to try to find one "perfect body type" would take forever, going in increasingly heated circles. and might end in bloodshed. =x
body image is a pretty touchy subject, as some of the things you say are "the best" may very well offend others because they don't qualify.

Date: 2006-01-02 07:27 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] minarin.livejournal.com
Yeah, I agree about the not qualifying part. It can be very sad ;-; But it's just like, there is always a best. The BEST grade is 100%, just because you don't attain that 100% doesn't make you bad or anything. There's a perfect match and a worst match for everything. If you've struggled to squeeze into that outfit and by the time a few hours have passed, the seams are ripping...well, that doesn't sound too good right? The same way someone desperately trying to make the outfit 4 sizes smaller and basically ruining the actual outfit...Well, that doesn't sound too good, either, does it?

Hehe, I don't know what the "perfect" lolita body is. Probably one that shouts "I'm not afraid to wear these beautiful clothes" (confidence) but not, "Look at me.. LOOK AT ME NOW, GOD DAMNIT! That's right...keep those pictures coming...WHAT DO YOU MEAN SHE'S PRETTIER?!!?!?!!?" (self-absorbed). You know? Just someone who is wearing their size...*shrugs* Petite but not bone-skinny. I agree wif those who say a little chubby-ness. Adds to it alot.

personally, i like average build. not rail-thin(clothes should fit, not hang)*, and not obese(you shouldn't be afraid to breathe in fear of your blouse buttons popping). but a little chubbiness is pretty cute, like that metamorphose model--dunno if it's what she wears or if she is actually chubby, but she looks adorable. makes me go "awwww xD"

*a good example of this is G, the KERA model. she is fckn awesome as most people would agree, but looks rather...bad in loli. and she's not even crazy skinny--like Yuuchin is...(0_o)

Yeah, I love G, but when she wears anything too frilly and lacey, I think she looks like a grandma. She could pull off gothic styles, kodona and aristocrat... basically anything that doesn't look like lace took a shit on it. Whatever, she's hot.

The moral : There's a style of lolita for everyone.

The perfect gothic lolita body is about 5'3", 32"-25"-35". Seriously, that's what size most clothes are made to fit... and really, those proportions are very common in Japan. People here are short and don't eat and are obsessed with dieting. Of course, Western people's bodies are much different so it's really a matter of being the right weight for your height and wearing clothes that fit your properly. If that means you can't fit into Japanese clothes it doesn't mean you don't look good in lolita- you just need to get clothes from somewhere else.

31-24-34 and 5'0" - I'm pretty close to the average young Japanese woman (though a bit shorter) and the "perfect" loli size. I have a very pubescent looking shape even though I'm about to turn 20. But guess what? I can also rock the aristocrat even though I'm about as far from tall and statuesque as you can get. And some of the cutest lolitas I've seen have been plus sized or tall or very busty. Some of the worst lolita attempts were made by people with "perfect" bodies for it. It's all about wearing clothes that flatter you and *attitude.* If you're uncomfortable with what you're wearing it'll show. Being the "right" body type just makes it easier to wear the fashions because the pre-made clothes of that fashion and the common lines and trims will be geared towards those types. But since many Western g&l lovers buy handmade anyway, it's not that hard to get clothes made to fit and flatter your body type.

I agree, it's all about how you carry of the look and are conscious of wearing things that flatter your body type. Like the user [livejournal.com profile] jola on here is bigger (I hope she doesn't mind me mentioning her here) and she's one of the most gorgeous lolis i've ever seen.

I'd say as long as you adapt the cut of your dress to your body size and shap I'dont see a problem. Yes if you want to buy clothes in Japan it will be much easier if you are small. But it is not requiered. I measure 1.95 meters (that is 6'5") and when I go Loli I wear mary-janes with a 3 inch heel. That makes me 2.02 meters (6'8") and that is taller than most pepole. Even when I go to fetishparties where all te women are wearing heels in the ranges 3-7 inches tall. Still I'll pull it off to look cute. I'm only growing a little layer of fat, I'm rather skinny, a softer outline would be nice.

Usually not very volumptuous, for either. Then again, that is all that I see here in Japan. I have seen some larger girls do EGL and it just looks weird to me, especially if they have a larger chest. However, EGA seems to look good on most body types, especially if you are tall.

However, I think the styles are all about attitude. If you do not act atleast a little cutesy and feminine, EGL is going to look slightly strange on you. If you act more mature, serious, mysterious, then go with EGA.

Very un-"PC" but I admire the honesty of the question, if not the question itself. I think it definitely looks better when people where their own size, no matter what it is, and when people wear whatever style compliments their natural look. I also think it depends on who's looking at them, and what those people are used to seeing. If you are Japanese and you are around Japanese lolitas, then it's more likely that you will prefer that look. However, someone like me, who is larger and more western looking, might take a liking to the larger look instead. Personally, I've seen lolitas of all shapes and sizes--some of them look good in it, and some of them look bad in it. I think honestly that a cheaply made outfit will make an ugly lolita before extra fat will.. or extra bony bones.

Think about it. The 'perfect' body has changed drematically throughout time. people used whale bones to construct a frame to make their bottoms hang out more, corsets are to constict the waistline to unnatural preportions, in the 20's it was fashionable to have a boy like figure with no breasts or curves in general.

Now 'the shape' to be is tall, large chested long legged and very thin, which of course isn't 'the' lolita shape.

Most of us don't live in the east or are asian (i think) so we're probably, unless we're freakishly short (for our population) and very thin (most people i know that are very short, however light and fit they are do not have a japanese frame) we won't have this said 'perfect lolita body'

Most people i know describe me as 'tiny' but though i'm short i'm not that short and my bottom is much to protruding and rounded so japanese clothes are mostly to short and scanalous on me.

I'd hope most people here realise they're pretty much outside of the lolita culture and japan and can create their own lolita culture where they are borrowing from, not depending on japanese egl. in theory (in practice there's a LOT wrong) what's wrong with western lolita brands? where did 'goth come from? japanese have borrowed that from us and made their own brands i'm sure all goths aren't so stuck up to only buy from the whitby festivals or dare i say it hot topic.

As for how you're feeling, put down the sweets and do some exercise. I'm sorry but you can't change your hight. I felt depressed recently and ate way too much and put on weight. Exercise may not change your weight but it'll make you feel a lot happier i promise 9something to do with things released or something) Take a positive attitude to feel happy with who you are and what you wear xxx

From: [identity profile] holhol-chan.livejournal.com
I agree with you 100%. You just have to feel good enough with yourself.
I'm 5'7 and wear a size 16 in a dress. I mean sure, most girls in JAPAN who do gothic&lolita are very small/very skinny, sure. But for as long as you're not in Japan, why does it matter? I live in New Orleans, and can assure you I'm around plenty of people ten times worse than myself, and look miserable, too. There are teenage girls that are worse than me, but that's not quite as bad as the fact that they stand there in baggy shirts and jeans, and slouching. It just doesn't look quite right.

You are who you are, and if you have enough confidence to go about your daily regimen decked out in gothic lolita then you should have enough confidence about yourself as it is. If you carry yourself with confidence, you'll look amazing.
Whatever happened to the quote, "If you feel great, you look great."?

i like Lolita because e i have a large bust, wide shoulders, narrow hips and a not very defined waist. To me (apart from the bust) i feel that i look doll-like in shape and i like looking like a china doll^^

This is why i am attracted to the style mainly it's, as most people have said, about having well fitting clothes and confidence rather than body shape.

I admire you for asking such an un-PC question.

Completely ideally I think that an aristocrat should be on the average to taller height range, slim and somewhat androgenous. A lolita should be on the short to average height range, somewhat small chested and a little bit chubby for sweeter styles, and more slim for gothic styles.

That being said, I think that a lot of it is just wearing your size and things that compliment your body shape. I think that I'm a good lolita, and I'm 5' tall, 35 (all in the front)- 23.5 - 35.5 (all in the back) with small shoulders and back. It's all about wearing what flatters you, and when you're a busty girl wearing things that show no cleavage and de-emphasize your chest. I make almost all my clothes because brand things tend to not fit me well (actually, the waist tends to be too big, which makes me look fat rather than having an hourglass shape), so I make my own clothes.

mm, doll-like for Gosurori, "tall and lanky" for EGA. However, let me say this: I think that there needs to be a good variety of shapes and sizes for the 'true nature" of gothic lolita and EGA to come out.

I mean, if every EGA was 6'0 and weighed 125 pounds, it simply wouldn't be that nice, visually...

Gosurori, "sweet" style calls for looking "cute", and, you know... cookie-ish? O_o; (I think that the sweet lolita who loves sweets and eating them herself is a very cute loli, indeed...) but I think that for the "skinny" or "lanky" lolita, simply adding more poof to your skirts and petitcoats themselves help a lot.

The good thing about lolita clothing is that if you feel "flabby" or "chubby" (which, describing yourself like that, it's ridiculous), is that for the most part, they are "high-waisted" dresses and skirts, to which "belly fat" isn't an issue. I know I'm not PC, but, that's what I feel like (and this isn't a PC topic to begin with, so...)

Especially for lolita: there are skinny girls, and chubby girls and short girls and tall girls (and boys, too). I think as such, it should be reflected for all gosurori. I will say that, as lolita strive for the "little girl" look, it's really hard to pull off the look if you are very tall.

I think the chubby looking gothic lolita style is very cute, you know?

I know a couple of people who emailed Aya at Metamorphose to ask her if (because they were tall) the dresses would suit them by reaching near knee-length. Aya pretty much told them that the only way most of the skirts would be decent were if they wore long bloomers to cover the leg that would have been showing. Still, they weren't told that they wouldn't fit the fashion, and Aya gave them suggestions on how to make the fashion work for them.

Lolita, as described by brand owners, is normally for girls in the range of 5'-5'4. there are a lot of people on here who have sold dresses that fit them perfectly because they were simply too short.
