[identity profile] candyskul.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] egl_archive
I'm a dutch girl, new to this community. I recently made a website with galleries of my egl/fairygoth inspired gowns and my paintings in oil. The url:

http://www.geocities.com/candyskul/index.html

A few examples of my paintings (I'm very inspired by Japanese gothlolita and kawaii)

Impressive, have you been in art for a while and just started painting? Anyway I always love to met other artist so this is a wonderful treat, thank you for sharing your work. Do you mind if I add you to my friends list?

I have to agree with all the other people, absolutely lovely work. I don't know if you've ever heard of Mark Ryden (http://www.markryden.com), but you're style seems to be fairly similar. But anyways, your paintings are really good.

these paintings, though styles are comparable, speak entirely different messages from ryden's work. if you have a problem with supporting similar styles, i can't imagine what you'd be doing in an egl community...

you're making yourself sound like a major hypocrite for critiqing a hugely talented budding artist for having a style comparable to mark ryden. maybe you're jealous or just another elitist fuck who can't stand to see other people create beautiful things.

Everybody has got their opinions.. lets just hope that the rude comment did not scare away a good artist from our community.

(though I do agree)

I knew when I posted that comment I'd get flamed, though I was trying to be polite. I think she has talent, and I said so. But it's one thing to "support similar styles" and another to profit from copying someone else. And I don't see how that makes me a hypocrite.
So she wants to paint. Power to her. My best friend is an art major. Hey, maybe she's never even heard of Ryden and it's just a coincidence how similar her style is. But it's a fact that one of the biggest roadblocks to being an artist is finding a way to do things that no one else has done before.

art is not about doing things no one else has done before. if this was the case, you might as well wipe every preraphaelite, surrealist, cubist, impressionistic, etc. painting off history. we are not islands. we share similar experience on this quaint little planet and it shows in our art. there is no such thing as a wholly unique piece of art.

you can explain it as you will and term my response to your opinion as a flame, but the fact is that you tossed your opinion out onto a webpage for all to see, including the artist, and my opinion about your opinion is just as relevant.

you can't go around incorrectly terming work as "plageristic" and not expect dissent.

You are so right! and in the words of the great Gary Numan: "We all live in the same museum. We all rearrange the same old songs."

I could point to artists who've inspired Ryden but why bother? All artists are inspired by those that have come before them but that doesn't mean they don't have their own individual flair or style. [livejournal.com profile] candyskul is clearly talented and has her own flair!

I really like your Art and the dresses!!! did you make the clothing you and your boy were wearing in the picture gallery? You two are beautiful people, with such creativity. I like the painting Sailor Blood. if I ever saw these pictures for sale I would try to buy one *(though being I am a broke college student.....).
keep up the good work, and please don't be intimidated by other peoples comments you have a good eye from what little I have seen of your work. (and the dresses.... man they were pretty...)
do you mind if I add you to my friend list?

Oh I know that I've commented on your pictures in another community but I have to say it again, they are totally beautiful. Don't care about that jealous one that said that you've ripped Ryden(?)'s arts your paintings aren't like his your is better... ^_^

I'd buy something from you but ah well I'm broke. But I'd love to have a very big painting made by you on a wall here at home... ^_^ <3

I hope that you do not mind that I'll add you to my friends list.

*whistles* Talent!

Don't listen to what *points* said, the best form of flattery is imitation. Besides, you said you'd been painting for a year? You'll work out your own style quickly enough. But as it is, I'd buy your work. There is nothing wrong with similar pictures. It's called "ART MOVEMENTS" people. ^_^;; Someone starts it, more people add their own little flair. Soon people with no talent like me find pretty pictures everywhere. Usually staying true to our favorites and the first ones. Yep yep.

I REMEMBER YOU! or rather your work i saw it on the black lolita message board and i kept thinking wow i wish i could own one of your paintings.... their fabulous, you ever sold any?

wow. those are paintings?! sugoi~~~~
Most art is similar in one way or another, some of the best art is simply used as a base and made better by another. Even music is like this. It's just how things are.
If it's not exact, don't gripe.
Anyways, I think they're quite lovely. ^_^

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, adorable! Adorable!

I am in love with the last painting -- if you ever sell them or make prints, I must get one of the last painting. *hearts* SO cute.

(Note: I don't think your style looks at all like Ryden! I find his work fairly ugly, and yours is super-cute!)

Your work is indeed quite beautiful, I am amazed by your talent ;-D
Such exceptional insight you have, I can't believe that you have only been painting for a year.

I certainly would purchase your work ;-}

Would you mind if I add you to my list of friends?

Just a little thing, if you have prints made you may want to consider looking into having Giclee (http://www.proteusworkshop.com/giclee.html) prints made of your paintings. I have friends whom had very good results using this process.
