Has anyone tried to shorten a [square dancing] petticoat by taking up the waist panel? If yes, is there any way to do it besides cutting, without all the bunchyness? Probably not... and I'll probably just end up cutting and making a new elastic casing and stuff.

I just recently shortened a petticoat by cutting off the nylon wast panel and sewing a new casing. It worked just fine, and was very easy.

I found that shortening my square dancing petticoat made it unmanagably full and I ended up looking more like Minnie Pearl than EGL, so I ended up making two 'coats out of it.

If you are talking about the kind that have teh nylon panel, if it doesn't need to be made bigger you can fold darts into it, or what I think is a little easier because nylon doesn't run, is cut slashes (two in front, two in back) in the nylon, so you can overlap them as something like darts, and then stitch them closed, and put in a new elastic (be sure to leave enough room to make a casing when you cut). Be careful though if you do this that you'll still be able to get it over your hips. There will be some gather because of the whole hip thing, but less than if you'd just cut it. If you want to avoid gather all together, you'll have to put in a zipper or some other closure to get it over your hips.
