Question about the "m word"...

So I've noticed something about egl posts talking about The store who shall not be named and I was hoping someone could help me out. Why do people type it M*lanoo with an asterick instead of an i? Does it summon the sockpuppets if you type the full name?

Sorry for being such a noob and nitpicking, I just wasn't sure if it was just a taboo or if using the name would cause their ads to rain down in apocalyptic proportions (that would be awful!).
