What would happen if you were to wear a cupcake petti with an a-line skirt?

I know this is a bit of a silly question, but google has yet to give me any answers.  So, I have a cupcake petticoat (from English Charm), but I'm interested in some skirts that have more of an a-line shape.  If I were to wear a cupcake petticoat under an a-line skirt/dress would it give a very awkward silhouette?  And, is it possible to (not permanently) modify a cupcake petticoat to fit more of an a-line skirt?  The petticoat isn't too overly poofy, and I just wanted to know before I wasted money on a skirt or dress I can't wear.  Thanks!
