Hello!

A simple way to make an OP out of a button up shirt and fabric. If you are anything like me, you can sew but not the best. I’ve always had trouble when it comes to sewing JSKs, OPs, or cutsews. So I found an easy way to make an OP!

 What you need:

- A button up shirt

- Enough fabric to make a skirt

- Lace or anything to you would like to add

- A sewing machine

- Seam ripper

- Measuring tape

- Pins

- Chalk, or anything to mark fabric

Step one:

First you need to put on the shirt and see how far you want the waist to be, mark it. (Figure 1) Since you have it on; mark where the button is below your breasts, or leave about 3 buttons down from your neck (Figure 3). You’ll need this so you can slip in and out of your OP. Take it off and cut. Make sure you leave enough seam allowance. Now with the seam ripper, rip up the side seems, only a few inches. This is where you will put your skirt and waist ties (Figure 2).Now get out your sewing machine and sew up to the button flap (Figure 3).

(Figure 1)

(Figure 2)

(Figure 3)

Step two:

With your measuring tape, measure, from your waist, to how long you want the skirt to be (don’t forget the seam allowance). Once you have that, now you need to find out if you want to pleat it or have an A-line skirt. (Follow below)

Pleat skirt: This type will give you a flowing waist. How many pleats you want depends how wide you need your fabric to be. If you want a lot then you need a lot of fabric. All you have to do is cut straight down (Figure 4). Now take that and cut it in half.

A-line: This type will hug your waist a bit but flare out at the bottom Take the measurements of your waist and multiply them by four [4].Or how ever big you want the bottom to be. Lay your fabric out not folded, then fold like a hamburger [horizontal] (Figure 5-A). **If you are making a long skirt, like to your ankles, then will layer to sheets of fabric together** Now this is where it gets kinda tricky. For example, if you have a 30 inch waist (of the shirt) and you multiply that by four you get 120 inches. Now divide that by two, along with the waist (of the shirt) [going with the example you would get 60 inches], why do you do this? Because you are going to fold it like a hotdog [vertical] (Figure 5-B) and then cut, trust me it makes it simple (Figure 5-C).

With both skirts you will come out with two parts of the skirt, don’t worry you didn’t mess up you are going to need them both

Step three:

Now that you have skirt cut, you can sew lace or some ruffles onto it now and this would be a good time to make waist ties. If you don’t know how to, I’ll be glad to show you. DO NOT SEW THE TWO PARTS OF THE SKIRT TOGETHER! You will sew up the sides once you have the skirt sewed on to the shirt (Step four).

Now get ready to pin it to the shirt. Make sure everything is inside out. On one side of the shirt, pin the skirt waist to the waist of the shirt [you may want to run the fabric through the inside of the shirt and out through the neck hole. This is so that when you sew them together, seam will be inside of the shirt, once you turn it right side out] (Figure 6-A). **If you picked the pleated skirt, then pleat them now** Now, sew together, trying not to get the back of the shirt too. Check it and see if it looks right (Figure 6-B), if so then do the same to the other side. Once again check it and you should have an OP with a really long slit up both sides.

Step four:

Turn inside out again. Now you are ready to sew up the sides of your OP, but don’t forget your waist ties (make sure they are inside the OP before you sew, so they will be on the outside when you flip it right side out).Turn right side out and your done! You can add anything you want, make it your own. This is just a basic OP.

Once I can I will take pictures of mine. I would love to see if you tried this. If you need any help I’ll do my best!
