Because thats what elitist Goths are like. If you ask the complete elite group/purists. They'll tell you that they ONLY listen to Gothic and occasionally Industrial bands.

I DO listen to Malice Mizer, Moi dix Mois, Dir en Grey, Baroque, Kagrra etc etc but I'm also in love with very un-EGL bands such as Enigma, Jeff Buckley, Kate Bush, Nick Drake, Smashing Pumpkins, NIN, The Cure, Siouxsie and The Banshees, The Smiths, Adam Ant etc.

I actually wouldn't call them un-EGL bands.. I mean, have you seen some of the stuff that the Gothic Lolitas in the Bibles listen to? Half of them are still stuck on Evanescence (such as Novala Takemoto), so.. *shrug* ^_^

Many people want to pigeon-hole themselves in all aspects of subcultures, not just with music. I think that's really sad. You should always seek to stay true to your heart even if it goes against traditional notions of propriety. ^^

Probably in Japan its wrong. Then again, Japanese fashion styles over there are just that, fashion styles, and not a subculture in whole, whereas over here, whatever music style you listen to tends to stick you in the subculture with it.
