So I decided it was time to stop buying fabrid and start using up some of the stuff that I had laying around. This material was given to me. And when I started out making this dress all I could think was this is probably going to be the ugliest dress ever. But it actually didn't turn out too bad. My plaids don't match, but I didn't feel like working on that, the next time I will. But I kind of like how it doesn't match up. Sorry the picture is so big, I wanted the sleeves to be seen. Well what do you think?

Sometimes I use a combination of already made patterns, and then sometimes I make my own. I'm not good enough yet to make it all up, the ones where I made my own came out bleh. lol I've only been sewing for 8 months.

That's almost the EXACT replica of my dream dress in my head. Did you use an existing pattern for it, or make your own?

I think that 1) the mismatched plaids aren't that noticable, 2) it gives it charm, and 3) it's ADORABLE.

Oh thank you, I was thinking it would really get picked on :D

I used several different patterns. The ruffled part of the sleeve is from but3524, the bodice part is but3389 (which I put the front on the fold instead since it's a button up shirt, but forgot I should have shortened it because it's a bit wider so it can hem under. So that is where my lines got all messed up because I had to adjust it considerable. Then I used just a regular puff sleeve, which I think but3524 has one, I just have a standard one I keep in a drawer. Then just a regular cirlce skirt.

I kind of like the mismatch too. I'm thinking I want a black and white gingham dress now. sly smile.

It's wonderful! I wish I could make as good dresses as you-but sadly I mostly just work on skirts and every once in a while a shirt or 2. I'm bad with structure on dresses.

You have probably grown a lot more then you think. With everything you make you learn a new trick sometimes or what not to do the next time. Like this dress for instance I know I need to cut the front bodice an inch thinner because of the excess width to compensate for the button holes that are supposed to go on it. See we just learn every time usually :D Do you have pictures of things that you have made?

giggle, isn't funny, how we look back. It was funny the other day I was at a church sale, which is where I got the green plaid for $1 for like five yards, and in the pile was all these half sewn things, and I was cringing for sure. giggle. I am selling a couple of my older pieces but it's like make an offer sort of thing.

Most of it is just used clothes, a few pieces are stuff that I made. the earlier ones aren't as good a quality as I would sell usually so I don't care if someone even offers $2, it just gets it out of my closet. giggle. Oh my! You make excellent dresses. I've fallen in love with them. Especially the green one(you already knew that), the 5th one, 6th and 7th in August 2004. And I do like 16 of the direct sale.

Thank you, that makes me feel better, sometimes I wonder if my things are too plain, but it could be because I look at them all the time.

It is super cute. ^_^ The off-matched checks (or plaid?) is most visible in the bodice of the dress.

What happened there is the bodice is done using a button up shirt pattern, but instead of the back being on the fold I put the front on the fold. But I didn't stop to think that they put excess fabric to compensate for when you hem over for the button holes. So it was way too wide for me, so I just darted it to make it fit. Which caused the plaids to not match up. Oh well lesson learned, one of the things that is great about trying to sew :D

It might well be, I copied the lace laying from this other dress I have a picture of. But it's no where near the other dress. I'll have to do up my own bodice pattern to make it like that. :D

I don't blame you, it was also my first attempt at plaid. I don't think it would have been so bad if I had not had to dart the front of the bodice. Sigh, better luck with it next time, practice makes perfect.

Thanks, I have way too much stuff on hand that needs to be used up. Close to 50 yards of misc cloths, 1400 yards of various lace. I went a bit over board. But at least I can get my sewing budget back under control :D I did get one icky comment so far, oh well, life goes on. giggle.

I try to be very supportive, because the things we make are a part of ourselves. I remember the first post of something i made, it was so terrible, I almost just quit the community, because I think there had to be close to 100 comments on it, and I would 70% were negative. So that hurt a lot. It was mostly due to me using Satin, they kept saying it wasn't egl. Then it turns out one of the japaneses companies two months later did a bunch of satin stuff, and then it was okay. giggle.

Yeah we do have to do it eventually, especially when I live in a 500 sq foot apartment. giggle. What type of stuff do you make? I can't say I recall any pictures. :D

Yeah, normally I try to shrink the pictures down, but when I did with this, you couldn't even tell the sleeves were the way they were :D
