I'm not surprised; Lip Service always manages to pick up on what's "hot." It's an okay looking dress, though I know that on the Black_Lolita yahoo group it's been ripped all over the place. Personally I think it's more because it's from Lip Service than anything; just like people rip Hot Topic.
^ That's complete idiocy. Not liking a brand because they don't always have quality things is one thing---not liking it because it's *gasp* "mainstream" is anal. That's just my opinion, though.
Love that dress :) Too bad Lip Service runs way too small.
You're right-it is idiocy. And some things you find at Hot Topic are not well-made. But it seems most of the time the discussions I read complain about how "mall goth" it is. Which may be true-but I know a lot of goths who had no place else to shop in their towns, or didn't know how to find the good stuff. Most of them *did* expand their shopping horizons beyond HT, and found their own styles.
If I was to complain, it'd be about how overpriced they are. And how some items are not well made. And how their sizes suck-if you don't live near a Torid you won't find large-size stuff.
I like the dress, the more I look at it. But I know Lip Service sizes, and I won't fit in anything smaller than a 1X or 2X. Which they don't sell on their site, and I haven't seen anyone else stock those in forever. And mind you, it's not like I'm HUGE-I can wear anything from a 16 to a 20 (depending on the maker) easily, which is the lower end of the BBW scale.
It's very common for these companies to either not make things in larger sizes or to cheat the sizing down where you can't fit. Which is why I have taken to ordering on-line from people who will make it my size, or shopping at places where they DO carry larger sizes...
see, i like lip service because their XS tops are basically made to fit me. but i hate lip service because their shit tends to be hideously overpriced, which means i rarely ever buy from them. some of their stuff is well made, and some of it is shit. like this corset style top i have that was beautiful when i got it but a year of careful handwashing later is starting to look like shit because all the elastic strands sewn into it are breaking and coming through the fabric and sticking out, and the lacing is frayed to shit. but lip service sizing definitely isn't bbw friendly... like a few too many clothing retailers.
and you're right about hot topic. overpriced and often not very well made, plus lately all their stuff is just plain ugly. (for once in my life, i get to be jealous of the big girls, instead of the other way around, because torrids still sell all the pretty stuff.) for what they charge i could have someone custom make it well to my measurements or fucking make it myself.
I have reached a point where I would rather pay a little more for something made to fit me that will last than pick up something off the rack that isn't right, needs adjusting, or is not made well. Also, it would be a way to support people who are part of our "community" and who contribute to it. Sort of being a patron of the arts, just less expensive...:P
Mall goths. *shakes head* I cannot stand people who actually judge if a person is an authentic goth, or what have you, by where they go to shop or even hang out. Being a goth shouldn't be about where you go, or what you wear. Gothic fashion is simply the product of a mindset. Anyhow, I won't rant on this anymore just to spare you all. *chuckle*
...It sounds as though we are the same size. Yeah, if I complain about anything that's under Hot Topic Inc, it's their prices and quality. Quality can be okay, even good, but it's always overpriced for what it is. Although, I'm lucky enough to have a Torrid here, and I usually find great deals in their clearence. Just recently bought a skirt that was originally $58, and I bought it for $20. Yay.
There's a couple of really nice shops here that sell Lip Service and other gothy lines, and some nice stuff too. But their prices? Well, they're in the French Quarter and tend to price for the tourists...Which means wait for it to go on sale and hope they have it then...
First, I ment the term mall goth as an example of the kind of insult I've heard. I am probably the most nonjudgemental person when it comes to "gothliness" because I know how some people feel about me and frankly, I don't need to be justified.
Goth SHOULD be about who you are, not what you wear or the club you go to or if you're in the right clique. Gothic fashion should be more about being creative, elegant at times, sultry others, but always with your own personal aesthetic...And please, rant if you wish-I'm always up for a good rant...
The main reason I go to HT is for their sales. Because their "list prices" are a bit out of line for what I think their stuff is worth. Except t-shirts, which I seem to just grab because I really like one...
they do have valid points about why they arent *strictly* egl though...not that i dont like the stuff, cos i do, its just that it shows too much skin, is too tight and other reasons im sure you know of, being on the list yourself as i would suppose. i cant recall anyone actually saying that they think its crap just because its lip service. they did say that they didnt liek western stores but its because of the fact that they dont stick to what is egl in japan.
It's not the same as Japanese EGL, but that's as you say the interpretation of the designers. I would like to see some Americans do more "classic EGL" stuff, and do their own interpretations of the style as well, because it's creativity that keeps the whole thing alive, and goth style does evolve, no matter how much it seems not to...
I think it's the interpretation of Lolita style that has people upset. After all, one of the most distinctive and unique aspects of Japanese lolita is that it's so modest and innocent, setting it apart from western goth styles. And yet that's the very thing that gets thrown to the wayside when it's interpreted by American designers. That dress is so low-cut and clingy, and made of such a sheer fabric, it hardly resembles Lolita at all. I think it's actually a rather nice design, and as I'm not 16 anymore I'd personally be much more comfortable wearing that style than a BtSSB dress; but I think it's not Lolita and shouldn't have that label.
I will agree with you on this point. If it had been called something other than a Lolita style, it might not have upset some of the more "classical EGL" types. It's definately more a grown-up interpretation of the style, and as I said I think it's nice.
I have to admit that much of the time I do not stick to the classical Lolita look, more a mix of elements. Partially because I don't have a lot of Lolita things, and partially because I like to try to make something different come out of what I have. So, sue me.
(don't actually sue me, unless you want a cat with bad breath and another that likes to pee on stuff...)
Is there a point where you can't wear the innocent, modest EGL style anymore? I hate to think there is an "age limit" but some of the outfits, no, I don't think work if you're not young. However, some of them-the more grown-up Victorian influenced ones-would work at any age. And the Lip Service style is definately a look for someeone who isin't "childlike."
All of which sounds confusing, but it made perfect sense in my head...
*I* think there's an age limit to wearing Lolita, but I know a lot of people would disagree with me... Overseas fans of the style have a very open-minded attitude about it so I suppose it could be worn by anybody of any age in North America or wherever. But I've been living in Japan for a year and it's quite different there -- Lolita style isn't worn by anybody over college age unless they're male band members. ^^; Once women become older than that, they either give up the look entirely or incorporate some (but not all) elements in a more mature look. Like, they'll wear an EGA long sleek skirt with a Lolita headdress; or maybe they'll wear an elegant velvet suit with a cute Loli handbag. They don't wear it all together, they tone it down with more sophisticated combinations.
And I agree about the EGA look being good for everybody. ^_^
Theres a new Emily shirt featuring emily in a pink dress with little hearts (full at the bottom, so it looks like shes got a petticoat) and a pink bow in her hair... veeeery cute!
what do you mean it shouldnt be about what you wear?? goth is entirely about fashion and music! :) heh..i didnt say its not superficial...but ill defend it to the end damnit ! :P
I would think that mainstream EGL and goth clothes wouldn't be looked down on that much here. Take the EGL bible for example. Most of those girls buy their dresses, and it's not umcommon to more then three girls wearing the same dress. I don't care where I get my clothes. I get bits an peices from everywhere, and buy what I like. One little accessory added to something you get at hot topic can make all the difference. And speaking of Hot Topic, I love that store, not only for clothes, but for everything else they have there *except for the care bear stuff >.<* I live in North Florida, and there are absolutely NO goth stores here. When Hot Topic popped up, I was in heaven.
oooh! ya i saw that also and was suprised that they decided to make their own egl line. but it's way too expensive, and their stuff is crappily made. i'd rather buy from people who custom make the clothing. or make my own. because then i know the quality will be better.
