thank youuuuuu!!!
Jan. 31st, 2003 05:36 pma BIIIIGGGG thanks to everyone whos posted back to my questions..they helped me out a LOTTT! (keep posting or contact me if you want to add anything else)
so, it looks like you guys pretty much agreed on the same things. you want a size variety thats not outrageously priced that plays more on the lolita side than the goth side. right? well, let me tell you what i already had in store:
*I love using softer fabrics that arent used that often anymore, for instance, poplin. i LOOOVE poplin. its cheap and it works well (good for you guys, too! no ironing!) i like using simple lace as well, usually eyelet or something cotton based. most of the stuff thats sold on ebay DOESNT have that, and it looks incredibly cheap.
*When i learned about marketing, i saw that most junior markets dont go that high in sizes. that upset me. i used to have a weight problem, and shopping was horrible for me, and that wasnt too long ago, so i can relate. especially for finding cute stuff! i plan on making all sizes. and if i dont make the size you wear, ill custom fit you!
* Everywednesday said something about emphasizing the waist and how its a bad thing...well, let me tell you something..most designer companies these days work with models with NO FIGURE. in my experimenting, making things tighter in the waist and more loose in the bust makes me look like ive got some kickin' curves. i even tailor my t shirts so theyre like that. i get tons of compliments. i refuse to go by most regular sizing standards. i have a 36 bust and a 28 waist. a lot of shirts look dumb on me cause my bust isnt big enough for them. its all loose...so, i do plan on having different waist and bust sizing to fit everyones needs...
about the dolls too....i was going to include that ANYWAYS! thinking of a inspiration for a season is the first thing you do. mine is "want to be a doll?" so all my designs WILL have matching dolls.
again, if you read all of this, thank you! im trying really hard to get into the fashion industry and getting to know what people want will help me get there. either comment back on this, email me, IM me...whatever!!!! thanks!

Date: 2003-02-01 05:11 pm (UTC)I so agree that most of the stuff floating around looks cheap -- in all honesty, even though satin is pretty, unless it's the super-good (super expensive) kind, it just starts looking... eh... after a while. (Or in excess...) I got a bunch of satin during a huge sale, so I went nuts and made a bunch of dresses -- they just wrinkle so easily. *bounces* I need to find a place that sells nice poplin around here. Cotton-based stuff is also nice because it BREATHES, which is really important when you have 20 layers of petticoat and skirt on. ^_~
The gothic/lolita question always comes up among my friends, but I think that egl has a pretty wide range within itself, no? (I always end up mixing too much cyber into my wardrobe... curse you, hot pink! CURSE YOU!) This (http://www.neitherland.com/hyperballad/candy/files/gothiclolita/vol4/006.jpg) is my favorite "gothic" egl ad.
And while I feel for everyone's various different figures and shopping problems (we're all very different shapes!) I'm a big fan of the waist. My bust is noticably -- some say "ridiculously" -- larger than my waist (44-32-42), and it's a snot trying to find dresses that realize one's boobs may have to fit. What a great idea to offer various cuts and styles! Too many people only make the same sort of thing... sigh... our local fashion design club always has the figureless model-clothes.
Dollies! Are you going to make the doll base, or are you making doll clothes to fit a certain size of doll?

Date: 2003-02-02 10:39 am (UTC)i really like using polin though cause i live in ARIZONA! its sooo hot here when youre wearing a completely black or dark maroon ensamble with a petticoat or bloomers, thigh highs, black shoes and all that jazz...makes you want to just sweat your internal organs out!
i got the idea for a slightly custom fit (bust/waist) from guys' jeans. i CANT wear girls' jeans. i hate them. so i'd buy guys' jeans cause theyre leg/waist fit. and you can have them AT your waist or slung low. i love that. some chicks with smaller busts (like me!) can get the fluffed bust tops that make us look a bit more even with a tighter waist. and girls with an about even bust/waist ratio can get things that are cut to make the waist look smaller. ive done a lot of research into silhoettes (how things make you shaped) and i realized most clothes on the market these days dont pay attention to that anymore like they did in the 50s. poor girls these days gotta deal with unfitting rags! im going to fix that..
In defence of my alledged CHEEP product
Date: 2003-02-01 05:26 pm (UTC)Re: In defence of my alledged CHEEP product
Date: 2003-02-01 06:26 pm (UTC)Satin looks horrible in pictures, and doesn't look good on large people. It's hard to clean, and hard to travel with. A plainer fabric would be easier to take care of, and easier to wear.
That is what makes your garments look cheap on ebay. There, I said it.

Date: 2003-02-01 06:54 pm (UTC)What does that have to do with anything? Did you just make up something so you'd have a retort?

Date: 2003-02-02 10:47 am (UTC)baby, the stars shine bright dont use satin. ive seen their products and all their products are either polyblend cotton or very light fabrics. im trying to immitate that quality in a way, but with my own spins on it. (my lolita designs are and arent like what you see in japanese brands)
the reason why japanese brands are so expensive though is because think of it: the japanese economy has more value than ours. their minimum wage is about $8 whereas ours is $5.15. that makes everything in their economy more expensive, therefore making clothing more expensive....plus wanting a designer name. ouch. talk about huge loss of money....
that, and if you know about retail, it goes like this: everything you buy is 4 times what it cost to make them. say you buy something that ends up being $40.00
takes them $10 to make it.
they sell it to the store to make double profit. ($20)
store sells it to you to make double profit as well. ($40)
phew! ive been doing so much typing...im out!

Date: 2003-02-02 10:50 am (UTC)im lucky that im not doing it for a full time job yet, but i can still test the waters. im having tons of fun doing it too.
once i get the hang of things, ill sell on ebay. i cant wait!
bravo!!!
I hope you do well because it sounds like your putting alot of thought into this.
I also agree on the satin thing. I hate satin in clothes to me it's too light and cold for vancouvers wet damp wet chilly wet climate. I'm always craving those warm cottons which stay warm even if they get damp. ^__^ Oh and I was busy and never got back to your questions but I prefere a very elegant lolita look. If I go little girly it's ALL in black with thick velvet and it's always something like a Moi Meme Moitte outfit when I'm done.
Good luck!
