XD I am still in teh process making more fluffy-ness on teh shirt though. (Maybe I'll put them up if anyone still wants to see them. ^x^)

One prob though... I need a fluffy skirt! >x< (short or long) Anyone know where to buy at decent prize? Just fluffy ones will be ok I can just sew other stuff on. XD Sankuu in advance! XD

PS: There was a really nice lj user kind enough to let me use her webspace though~ Sankyuu! ^x^ But waii I fixed teh pics! XD ::huggles::

You are tooooooo cute!!!!!! I love the bonnet <3

By fluffy do you mean like the kind the EGL girls wear that poof out?

If you want you can make one. Its REALLY easy. I made one for halloween and I was surprised how easy it was. If this is what you are talking about, you should look up tutorials on circle skirts, because that's really all they are. you cut out a giant donut out of cloth and where the hole is, thats where your waist it. well in some ways its more like you have to cut an oval in the center so it will fit your waist, but YEAA~! XD! I'm sure there are many tutorials on making circle skirts. And lacing it is simple too. All you need then is a perty petticoat and poof~! voila <3!

If thats not what you meant, sorry XDD~! <3

I've found that circle skirts are often mistaken for being the same as any regular EGL skirt. Circle skirts bad! Heehee ^__^ They hang very differently from EGL skirts found in Japan. For maximum floofiness, make a gathered skirt. They are just as easy to make, but they are basically two large large rectangles instead of a circle that is gathered at the top and either a flat waistband or elastic one is attached (flat looks best of course).

To illustrate the difference in the way either skirt type hangs, I've used a pattern drafting software to draft each type and show how the computer renders how they would look if made:

By the way, to the original poster, gorgeous headpiece! Wai~!

Excellent illustration, Marle! It is good to have something to base on when reminding people of that EGL skirts aren't circle skirts and that circle skirts hangs differently (they're more sleek and figure-hugging without petticoat and with petticoat they just look flat and square dance-ish).

Gathered skirt is the way to go if you want to have the genuine EGL poofy bell skirt look. In my opinion it is also easier to make gathered skirts than circle skirts. You do not have to calculate the waist hole, you do not need to bother with sewing fabric on bias and such...

Gathered skirts are actually very easy. Here's what you need: a rectangle of fabric, at least twice as wide as your waist measurement, and as long as you want the skirt to be. Then you need a piece for the waistband, which should be your waist measurement (plus an inch or whatever for the seams and a little more if you want an overlapping button flap, etc), and twice as thick as you want the waistband to be. Gather the big rectangle so that it is the right length for the waistband, then fold the waistband over and sew. Then put a zipper in the back and sew that seam up... That's pretty much it, you can do it without a pattern (the big rectangle can also be a few smaller pieces sewn together, I usually have 3 for an untrimmed skirt). You could probably even use a bias tape or something for the waistband.

I think gathered skirts are way easier than circle skirts... but then, I've never sewn a circle skirt, because they scare me.

Awesome instructions ^__^ Mind if I snag them? I do that a lot with useful information in the hopes that one day when someone asks or whenever I finally get my website up I will have the info.

Circle Skirts vs. Gathered Skirts

One thing to keep in mind, though- in my experience, I find that circle skirts are easier to wear and more flattering on a wider range of body types than a dirndl (gathered skirt), because you don't have all the bulk of the gathering collected at your waist. For my part, I am a skinny girl with no waist definition at all, and wearing a gathered skirt makes me look like a hippo, because all that extra fabric is bunched around my waist.

This may be true, but realize that EGL is worn by heavier and thinner girls in Japan since it so accommodating to both. I've noticed that many wear their blouses un-tucked to sort of smooth the line out. It helps mask the look of 'from nothing to huge hips'. I just don't see circle skirts in use at all over there, and they don't seem to fit the style very well. As Helena pointed out, even with a petticoat they look oddly flat (hence square-dance-ish) and without one, to me, they remind me of swing dance skirts.

I'm curious as to what pattern program you use? It looks pretty nifty and I might have to get my hands on a copy ^^

Here is the answer to your question and a couple of other suggested programs as well:

The one used above is called Dress Shop 5 Fashion Designer (http://www.livingsoft.com). This program will supposedly let you design your own clothes beyond what most programs do, it lets you move points around to create any shape of collar, skirt, blouse, neckline, closure, sleeve and darts. I don't have the full program, I've only been playing with it to see if I like it enough to pay for it. The website lets you run the program on their site or you can download an evaluation copy to try.

Another major pattern making program out there is called Pattern Master (http://www.wildginger.com) and it lets you make custom patterns by choosing what options you would like on whatever garment you are creating. This program has one thing going for it that Dress Shop doesn't have -- photos of how to take all of the crazy measurements they ask for.

Lastly there is, PatternMaker (http://www.patternmaker.com/), I've tried an older version of this one before and at the time it was way over my head. They may have improved since then though.

My suggestion is to try out the demos for them and decide which one you like the best. Though I think out of the first two, only Dress Shop has a gathered skirt pattern built in. That, coupled with the ability to design garments freely makes it my first choice so far. ^__^

I was just curious on what software you used to come up with the patterns and samples. I will be getting a sewing machine for xmas and am quite excited about getting the right tools to get me started! Your response would be greatly appreciated! :)

Yay lace! I love ruffly pretty loli stuff and your headpiece is cute!

Making a skirt is the cheapest way to go, I got a little bit of help making mine, but it wasn't that hard. Since I got discount fabric and trim, it probably cost me less than $10 or $15. And it actually came out looking nice! I based it on a pattern for a french maid costume skirt from Wal-mart. You should try! Ganbatte, ne!

Love your icon! I wanna be Gackt's bread! (^^)

*huggles back* just. can't. resist. so. cute.!!!

Yeah, who would have guessed that Wal-mart could be so helpful in the quest for affordable lolidom? It's that or modifying a thrift store find, which is great if you can find a good skirt to begin with!

I know, Mana is so gorgeous! Can't resist that face...those clothes! It's so unfair...he's so lovely, he makes us real women look bad! (^^;)

I'm coveting your headdress in the worst way... covet covet covet...

Yeah, they've said everything about skirts. See above. ^_^;; Although with the outfit you're wearing I'd go with a long black skirt for a more Atelier Pierrot touch. 'Tis simply me, though... good luck!
