has anoyone altered the bust of their garments to make them bigger an any way? the fabric is just black cotton/ply and i need it about 3 inches wider in the bust area. im thinking i can use a rectangular shape of fabric in the back. have any of you done this, how did you go about doing it. or have you gone to a tailor? thanks.

A rectangluar peice should work alright, but it may be easier to alter the side seams of the garment if it's easy to get to. Depending on how you lay the rectangle, you may also have to fuss with the waist measuments, too.

I have made a dress bigger around the bust once by using two triangles on each side seam, like right under your under-arm. The point of the triangle should point down. Not only is the side seam easy to work with, but it's a rather inconspicuous spot to boot! I hope that helps. If you need a better explanation than that, let me know :]

er....that should have said "two triangles, one on each side seam." i didn't mean to say two on each side. my apologies.

I vote for the side seams as well. I've made a bunch of stuff that laces up the side when I couldn't find matching fabric. The problem with adding fabric in the back only is that the side seams won'tbe directly under your arm anymore, which will really screw it up if you have sleves (whihc adding to the side seam will too anyway) Both altering at the back and side will screw up any bust darts or princess seams though. If you do have bust darts, there's not much you can do with them but let them be off. If it has princess seams you can do all kinds of fun stuff, I'd make a new center panel of a fun fabric or something, or add stripes in the seams, etc.
