The recent post on a Japanese seller on ebay reminded me of my favorite means of obtaining lolita-wear direct -- auctions.yahoo.co.jp (served me well during my brief cel collecting phase, and now it's my favorite place to hopefully look for clothes (but alas only 1 or 2 in a hundred would fit. Too fat -_-;) If you're on the smaller side and want BTSB dresses, just plug "Baby Stars" or somesuch into the search engine (if you have japanese font capabilities, you can enter "gothic lolita" in Japanese and get more dresses than you could ever look through in a day). You'll probably have to bid with a deputy service, but generally the dresses are less than retail (anything from $50 to 150 -- "off brand" dresses appear to be the best value) so deputy service isn't too much, and shipping on a dress is cheap.

...I dunno if that's of use to anyone, or if you've all already thought of it anyway, but I thought I'd pass it along ^_^*

no, you have to have Japanese text enabled to see the Japanese. Even without it, you can search for and look at anything with a Roman-based name, like Baby!, Emily Temple, etc. and translate it with babelfish. It really helps to have Japanese text enabled, though. I don't speak a word of Japanese, but I can recognize, and therefore cut and paste, the characters for "loli", "dress", "cosplay", etc.

Yeah, I'm running OS9 on my computer (so no Japanese text) but now I just use my boyfriend's eMac, so I can copy and paste characters :) Even without Japanese text, you can still view Roman-based labels, like Emily Temple, Visible, etc.

I use Yahoo Auctions for all my Gothic Lolita clothes, but it's so hard to use for anyone without good Japanese skills, I wouldn't reccomend it. And those services that bid for you are a total rip-off, but I guess I wouldn't want to bid for anyone seeing how many things can go wrong and leave people losing money>_<;; I did it once to buy a Kyo tie for someone, but it was so nerve-wracking I don't want to try it again! But if you are good at using on-line dictionaries and understand how to translate Japanese grammar, and write polite letters to people asking if you can bid, you should try it and get gothic lolita clothes for less than half their original price.

I've tried that, but a lot of sellers simply will not ship internationally (at least that I've come across; I think I've only had two ship to me despite having a "no international shipping" tag on their auction). I don't use it often at all due to the cost, but I'm willing to pay $10 - $15 for deputy service (which I don't consider a rip-off, anyway, due to the inconvience and financial risk they're taking) on a dress that's selling for $100 less (or more) than the retail. And as for Japanese skills, I can recommend it for someone who doesn't speak a word of it, as I don't and haven't had any problems. I can recognize (and copy and paste) words that I commonly search for, and with a phrase book I've managed to send "Sorry, I don't speak Japanese; can this be sent to the US?" -type emails successfully. (Even when they say 'no' they seem to have understood what I was asking) That's just my 2-cents, at any rate. Certainly it's not for everyone, but it's a good method if you're willing to make a little effort.
