I don't really post much, but now I need some help;) I started making my Halloween costume yesterday. I'm going as a Fairy crossed with a 1940's style Pin-up Girl. It all looks very lolita-inspired.
I have this black dress from the 1950s.. I never really wore it out before because the length was very unflattering on me- it's a ballerina-looking dress that's almost calf-length. The dress itself is black silk organza (the skirt) with a very tight black lace bodice, there a little bow in back, and it has glittery rhinestone straps. So, here is what I did- I shortened the entire thing to an almost indecent length, by sewing the underskirt up onto itself (like a really wide hem) and doing the same with the overskirt, but that I had to handstitch all around so it wouldn't show on the front. This almost doubled the pouf with all the extra fabric, and it look's very naughty-fairy like now. So- I have a pink flower crown left over from a fashion show from college, I have both a pink net and a black nylon petticoat to wear under the dress (if I so choose, but it's so poufy it looks like a birthday cake even now) I'm going to dilapidate some pink organza roses and stitch them up the dress in a trailing-vine kind of pattern, and add some falling off the shoulder straps, in black tulle. Here's question number one: if anyone has ever worked with vintage clothing or costumes or doll clothes, you'll note that the tulle they use is much drapier, prettier looking than the nylon tulle you can buy at Joanne's/ craft stores. Is this just the effects of aging, or is it a different fiber content altogether, and can I buy it anywhere? I live in NYC so if it exists, I should be able to get it in the garment district. I want this to decorate my straps, as I think it would fit better with the overall materials of the dress than nasty plasticy-tulle.. and I'm sure I'll be wearing this thing well after Halloween;)
I bought these shoes:
http://store5.yimg.com/I/mydivascloset_1755_55999701(I have a pink and black theme going here) in the baby pink. So what I need now are wings, stockings and some kind of a necklace, and i need some help! For wings- I definitely want to go with black, but not the angel feather-wings that are so popular now.. I want tulle, but I was hoping to find something kind of interesting since I'm starting so early. Any suggestions for cool and interesting wings? I used to make wings frequently, but honestly I'm kind of sick of it, and I think I could find something cooler looking in the store or on Ebay.
With stockings, I am torn between stripes- I would want want pale pink and black, which I cannot find anywhere) and something sheer, like fishnets, or the sheer stockings with the line down the back. I was also thinking of maybe two thigh-highs in different colors, maybe one pink, one black. I always liked that look when i saw it, but then I'd be the Loli-1940s-Pinup-Pippi-Longstocking-Ballerina-Fairy! Hehe heh, I've never been a purist, so why start now;)I like to put every influence I've ever had into one outfit;) Give me creative stocking ideas!
Lastly- I want a necklace type which is difficult to describe, so bear with me... I've actually been looking for one for quite some time, to no avail. It's like, many stands of thin wire, twisted together to look like a viney, organic shape. There are little sparkly beads strung randomly along the wires, but not in a line, just interspersed here and there. Has anyone ever seen this type of necklace, or know what it's called, how to make one? Help!
What about Fairy Makeup ideas?
Ooh, oh, one more thing (sorry this post is so long and monstrous) - someone posted a method for distressing gauze, making it look all grey and graveyard-esque a few months ago. Anyone have that posting? If I remember correctly, it was used to trim a parasol. I want to use it to trim my Halloween tree:)
