Am I the only one that hates the hot topic kinderwhore/gothic lolita style dresses?
Specifically, this new one...

i know there was a post about it before, and everyone was like "Ooo i want it!" But i just... hate it. The huge bows on the stomache, the scoop neck line, the girls hairstyle... just yuck. What do y'all think?

Most of the Hot Topic models are really like...bad choices. I don't know why they use them sometimes, but oh well.

I dunno, it really doesn't look like a real EGL dress, but hey, at least they tried...or something...

I agree about that hairstyle, and those bows are less than flattering, but I quite like that neckline. (Then again, most of the stuff I wear on a regular basis has a low scoop neckline, so I'm somewhat biased.)

I'm just pleased that EGL seems to be catching on - I don't wear it often (most of it looks terrible on me, but that's because this is a style meant for smaller girls, and I'm far, far from being small. Not to mention too old for it, but that part is mental.)

Gods yes it's hidious! That's soooo tacky eighties. I expect it to be purple and green with gold details not black.
And the other hottopic lolita dress is fairly fudgly too but least it looks more egl. Just too americanized for my tastes!

Heh! Some frilly eighties stuff was quite pretty! I should take pictures of myself in my two eighties-style dresses...

I agree with you about the HT dress, though. xp Yuck. Although I'm sure it'd look nicer on a better-looking model. >_>

Most of what Hot Topic calls "lolita-ish" is more doll-turned-prostitute attire, in my opinion... Though this may have largely to do with the fact that their dresses are all so tackily made!

I think this Americanized, Hot Topic EGL is just gross. Some of it can be cute (like Lipservice's frilly line from last summer), but it just lacks the innocence and elegance of my idea of EGL: Japan's version.

I said "YUCK" at first to that dress pictured because of the model's awful hairstyle and garish makeup. I know the makeup is supposed to echo a porcelain doll's... But the kind of doll they have in mind is ugly anyway, IMO. =\

I don't mind the dress itself but calling it "EGL" bothers me. A lot of the overseas "Lolita" clothing is like that... if it was just called a "short dress" I'd say "how cute!", but as a "Lolita dress" all I can think is "NO NO NO!"

I live in Japan and see Lolita style all the time. And sometimes I'm just shocked by the outfits I see overseas "Lolitas" wearing in photos. The girls are pretty and their clothes are cute and interesting, but I can't see what connection these outfits have to the Lolita style. Like, where'd the stripey tights come from? o__O; After a year and a half in Japan I have not seen one single Lolita in stripey tights here (punks yes, but never a Lolita) yet somehow it seems to be a required item for overseas interpretations. What happened? o_o;

I guess I'm a purist... I don't have a problem with people dressing any way they want or mixing up styles for their own unique look. But if they're going to call their style by a label, then I think they ought to do some research and make a serious effort to make sure their outfit matches the label well.

I think the stripey tights comes from a Tim Burton association with the style. EGL seems like something he'd do, I think.

I to am a bit offended by that dress. I mean maybe its the model, maybe its the make up, maybe its just hottopic I DONT KNOW; but i do know this if lolitaism is going to have followers I DO NOT want them to get the impression that that "it" of a picture is the way to do it.

From: [identity profile] yapipie.livejournal.com
Well, it's not toooo bad... But of course, if it ever fell into my hands, I'd remove that belly bow, tear off the frill from the scooped neckline, then do that nun-ish turtleneck thing from the scooped collar (it's hard to explain XO), and add puffed sleeves...

And yeah, the model is kinda... wrong... I dunno. She's rather long and skinny, so the short lolita dress isn't working for her in the way it's supposed to work. I think a small dress like that would look better on smaller girls with a little more meat in them.

For her to be EGL, I think she should wear something a bit longer. Something that'll give her the illussion of smallness or something.

But who knows, maybe it's just me...

I still like this dress. Maybe because I like the kinderwhore style a lot, and I think this dress isn't EGL, but could be a mix between kinderwhore and EGL.

But the dress really look gross on this "model".
I think we can have a better view of the dress on this page...

IMO the problem with most of the Western (mostly American)interpretations of EGL is that they have taken certain elements of the style, but not quite got the handle on it. As other people have said, the neckline on this dress isn't typical of Japanese EGL. I'd also say that the waistline isn't typical either, it comes down too low on the hips - most of the Japanese EGLs seem to wear the waistline sitting actually at the waist or even a little higher (possibly becasue it makes the wearer look more little-girl-like/doll-like?).
Likewise, the skirt is less poofy than I'd expect. I've noticed the same kind of things going on in a lot of outfits done by Western goth-lolis. I have to say, I think it's kind of inevitable that the style will be interpreted differently by people from different cultures, but I think a lot of the Western egl stuff departs too much from the spirit of the thing - it should be possible to retain the original spirit of EGL while adding your own individuality/creativity.

Having said that, the dress does look much nicer on the actual Lip Service site, where it's accessorized better (the model's choker improves the neckline, for instance).

I've got one suggestion to make though - this isn't particularly directed at this community, but a general thing - I've noticed that a lot of EGL-related discussion seems to be about whether a particular outfit is or isn't EGL. I've seen discussions about this dress in about 5 different places (including IIRC in here a few months ago). Personally, I'd much rather read about or see photos of all the gorgeous EGL outfits everybody is putting together! *Hint hint*

Hmm...

Personally I think the dress itself has possibilities, but as others have said my problems with it stem from the model and the claim that it's EGL. The model has no hips to speak of so the dress just kind of hangs flatly on her, giving no sense of bounce. The girls make-up and expression don't really help either; look sophisticated or cute, not like a whore!

As for the dress itself, it seems to have more of a boat neck rather than a scoop neck (or maybe I'm just looking at it funny). I also don't like the frill around the neck, makes it look too disco. And for godsakes rip that horrid bow off! It looks terrible in the front! I do like the fabric however, and the lower bell of the dress.

P.S. Has anyone seen pics of EGA? I rarely do.
P.S.S. Anyone else sick of cosplayers who can't seem to puff out the skirt?

I own this dress.. i wore it with a little lace skirt under neith to poof it out and give a little something.. i egl"d it out with accessories and the right hair .. also the right hair accessories i even had a boy come up to me and say you have that egl thing down..someone you wouldnt think would even know what that is and well i wore knee socks with bows on the sides the suited the bows on the tummy .. i guess it could accentuate a bad area except i wore a waist cincher underneith....

i dont fit the japanese clothing.. my curves are to big so this and other things like it are very welcome to me . i dont mind a little work makeing it better.. ;)

I dislike the bows in front like that, and everyone seems to be agreed that the model does not make the dress work at all. The skirt portion is cute if not puffy or long enough for a really japanese-style lolita skirt - more short and sexy than cute and innocent, which is not a bad thing, just not necessarily strictly EGL. But you could certainly make it moreso with a few additions...

For some reason this looks like a dance outfit/leotard-type thing to me more than a dress on this model, actually. The picture on the actual site does look much better - shows just what accessories will do! behold their power! But gah! Those bows! Why are they in front? Who decided that, really!

e_e Personally, in my opinion, I'm hatin' it.

Like I said previously to something like this, I hate seeing GL going mainstream; especially at Hot Topic. There's gonna be the people who don't know a thing about EGL and wearing the stuff and announcing that they are cool because they wear it and everybody is gonna ooh and awe and want to do it, and then the cycle will continue. I dunno. I don't think we, as Western lolitas (along with our Aussie and European friends) haven't quite gotten lolita right, ourselves. Like it was made clear a few posts back, "What's up with the stripe socks?" I mean, sure. There's gonna be differences between two very different cultures. And we're trying. But to see it go mainstream...it's going to kill it completely.

Maybe it's just the model, too...but I don't like it much myself.

That's my beef. >_> Nobody has to like it or anything. Just my humble opinion! o.o I respect everybody else's opinions on it. I, as myself, just don't like to see this happening, nor do I like the dress in question. x_x I think it's tacky.

...I do like those shoes, though.

That was definately something i thought too. It always happens that way something wonderful and beautiful brought to America is completely desecrated from the original. I just KNOW im going to be walking around at school or elsewhere and see this fake misinterpretations of what is EGL thinking their "so cool" and getting praise for it. It makes me sick.

I don't like it at all. It has too short skirt, it is made of semitransparent (it really is, you can see the bra on the Lip Service model) and too large cleavage. It is absolutely not EGL.
