Jul. 7th, 2003 02:35 amAm I the only one that hates the hot topic kinderwhore/gothic lolita style dresses?
Specifically, this new one...

i know there was a post about it before, and everyone was like "Ooo i want it!" But i just... hate it. The huge bows on the stomache, the scoop neck line, the girls hairstyle... just yuck. What do y'all think?

Date: 2003-07-06 11:51 pm (UTC)I'm just pleased that EGL seems to be catching on - I don't wear it often (most of it looks terrible on me, but that's because this is a style meant for smaller girls, and I'm far, far from being small. Not to mention too old for it, but that part is mental.)

Date: 2003-07-07 12:11 am (UTC)And the other hottopic lolita dress is fairly fudgly too but least it looks more egl. Just too americanized for my tastes!

Date: 2003-07-07 12:34 am (UTC)I agree with you about the HT dress, though. xp Yuck. Although I'm sure it'd look nicer on a better-looking model. >_>
Most of what Hot Topic calls "lolita-ish" is more doll-turned-prostitute attire, in my opinion... Though this may have largely to do with the fact that their dresses are all so tackily made!

Date: 2003-07-07 12:30 am (UTC)I said "YUCK" at first to that dress pictured because of the model's awful hairstyle and garish makeup. I know the makeup is supposed to echo a porcelain doll's... But the kind of doll they have in mind is ugly anyway, IMO. =\

Date: 2003-07-07 12:35 am (UTC)I live in Japan and see Lolita style all the time. And sometimes I'm just shocked by the outfits I see overseas "Lolitas" wearing in photos. The girls are pretty and their clothes are cute and interesting, but I can't see what connection these outfits have to the Lolita style. Like, where'd the stripey tights come from? o__O; After a year and a half in Japan I have not seen one single Lolita in stripey tights here (punks yes, but never a Lolita) yet somehow it seems to be a required item for overseas interpretations. What happened? o_o;
I guess I'm a purist... I don't have a problem with people dressing any way they want or mixing up styles for their own unique look. But if they're going to call their style by a label, then I think they ought to do some research and make a serious effort to make sure their outfit matches the label well.

Date: 2003-07-07 02:42 am (UTC)And yeah, the model is kinda... wrong... I dunno. She's rather long and skinny, so the short lolita dress isn't working for her in the way it's supposed to work. I think a small dress like that would look better on smaller girls with a little more meat in them.
For her to be EGL, I think she should wear something a bit longer. Something that'll give her the illussion of smallness or something.
But who knows, maybe it's just me...

Date: 2003-07-07 03:08 am (UTC)But the dress really look gross on this "model".
I think we can have a better view of the dress on this page...

Date: 2003-07-07 03:41 am (UTC)Likewise, the skirt is less poofy than I'd expect. I've noticed the same kind of things going on in a lot of outfits done by Western goth-lolis. I have to say, I think it's kind of inevitable that the style will be interpreted differently by people from different cultures, but I think a lot of the Western egl stuff departs too much from the spirit of the thing - it should be possible to retain the original spirit of EGL while adding your own individuality/creativity.
Having said that, the dress does look much nicer on the actual Lip Service site, where it's accessorized better (the model's choker improves the neckline, for instance).
I've got one suggestion to make though - this isn't particularly directed at this community, but a general thing - I've noticed that a lot of EGL-related discussion seems to be about whether a particular outfit is or isn't EGL. I've seen discussions about this dress in about 5 different places (including IIRC in here a few months ago). Personally, I'd much rather read about or see photos of all the gorgeous EGL outfits everybody is putting together! *Hint hint*
Hmm...
Date: 2003-07-07 04:05 am (UTC)As for the dress itself, it seems to have more of a boat neck rather than a scoop neck (or maybe I'm just looking at it funny). I also don't like the frill around the neck, makes it look too disco. And for godsakes rip that horrid bow off! It looks terrible in the front! I do like the fabric however, and the lower bell of the dress.

P.S. Has anyone seen pics of EGA? I rarely do.
P.S.S. Anyone else sick of cosplayers who can't seem to puff out the skirt?

Date: 2003-07-07 06:34 am (UTC)For some reason this looks like a dance outfit/leotard-type thing to me more than a dress on this model, actually. The picture on the actual site does look much better - shows just what accessories will do! behold their power! But gah! Those bows! Why are they in front? Who decided that, really!

Date: 2003-07-07 07:06 am (UTC)Quite a difference, eh? (sorry, I couldn't bear for Lip Service to get knocked!!)
Lip Service Rox Mah Knee-sox. I've wanted to work for them so badly, but alas, their offices and design studios are all the way in LA, and I really don't like Cali enough to move there. I'll wait patiently till they open an NY office :p

Date: 2003-07-07 10:12 am (UTC)Like I said previously to something like this, I hate seeing GL going mainstream; especially at Hot Topic. There's gonna be the people who don't know a thing about EGL and wearing the stuff and announcing that they are cool because they wear it and everybody is gonna ooh and awe and want to do it, and then the cycle will continue. I dunno. I don't think we, as Western lolitas (along with our Aussie and European friends) haven't quite gotten lolita right, ourselves. Like it was made clear a few posts back, "What's up with the stripe socks?" I mean, sure. There's gonna be differences between two very different cultures. And we're trying. But to see it go mainstream...it's going to kill it completely.
Maybe it's just the model, too...but I don't like it much myself.
That's my beef. >_> Nobody has to like it or anything. Just my humble opinion! o.o I respect everybody else's opinions on it. I, as myself, just don't like to see this happening, nor do I like the dress in question. x_x I think it's tacky.
...I do like those shoes, though.
