Dressing Up In School- Resolved
Aug. 29th, 2012 11:23 pmAs a beginner in lolita fashion (and other fashions as well from general punk to fairy kei and some kandi kid in between) I've been working on dressing up and going around in public in my "over the top" outfits, trying to learn how to ignore the stares and the whispers behind my back. But with a new principal in school and teachers who try to find every possible way to ruin a student's fun, suddenly I'm doubtful if I should wear some of my more flashy outfits to school or not. A little advice would be very, VERY much appreciated! ;u;"
Apologies, I'm new here and unfamiliar with LJ, so if I make any mistakes I'm really sorry orz don't mean to! (I don't even know how to do a cut, am I doing it right? :'D) I also made sure to check the memories and I didn't see anything really like my situation however if there is something there please point me in the right direction and I'll get out of your guys' hair aha :D"""
This year there's a lot of changes going on in my stupidly small town, among them new staff and people of an important variety in my highschool. While most of my teachers I think wouldn't mind it, there's one or two I'm not so sure about, and a new principal whom I've never even spoken with before.
While wigs and such don't technically count as hats, and while there are girls who dye their hair rainbow and hot pink, I'm worried that I might be pegged as "being a distraction" and be asked to take off my wig or some of my accessories though none of them are inappropriate for school and none of the other girls have ever been asked to do the same. My main reasons for worrying are as follows: 1) I'd be the only one in the whole school doing the wig thing. They might zero in on me simply for being different, and because I'm one of a kind teachers could possibly get away with telling me it's not allowed or something even though there are no rules stating so, and I'm also concerned because 2) of an incident last year, which basically sums up to me wearing jeggings and a black petticoat from Hot Topic with a slip built in, and one of the councelors actually told me to pull my skirt down farther because apparently I was showing too much ass, even though I had jeggings on underneath so there was nothing to see, and there are popular preps who run around in shorts that go no farther than their crotches??
So I suppose this is what I'm asking for your guys' opinions on: should I dress down for a little while and talk to my teachers and/or principal individually and ask for permission, or should I stand up for my right to self expression while not violating any written school policies and go ahead and dress up as much as I want anyways? :/
EDIT: Thank you all so much for your opinions! I'll be sure to take them into account any time I dress up in lolita in any place be it work or school. There were a few things though that popped up in the comments that I should probably clarify:
- I don't actually have a particular style of lolita that I'm limited to, and while I do like sweet and OTT, (and I probably should have clarified this from the beginning,) I was thinking of wearing more classic and some gothic lolita outfits, with the occasional very toned-down sweet one thrown in, and I do emphasize VERY. Large headbows would be a complete distraction, and pigtails would make it hard for the person behind me to see in front of and/or around me. Most of the wigs I was thinking of wearing would be either short blonde, brunette or black wigs, mainly because I hate the color of my own hair with the burning passion of a thousand suns and I can't dye it the colors I want without my mom and dad kicking my ass, or ruining my real hair for that matter.
- Another thing that came up was my classes themselves, and I assure you I would not wear lolita into something like biology or chemistry even if I did have them because that would be just asking for trouble. My classes are mainly orchestra, art, history, english and math with a study hall thrown in, and I would make sure not to wear lolita on days we were working with something messy in art like charcoal, clay, or photodeveloping chemicals, again, just asking for trouble.
- I can handle being teased, otherwise I wouldn't even dare wear lolita to school. This also would not be my first time dressing up a little crazily to school, I've decked myself out in punk rocking clothes, complete black goth and bright rainbows with bracelets going all the way up to my elbows before, people have gotten used to it, even though I didn't do it that often.
- About the jeggings and petti thing- my jeggings, the only pair I have, are made of very thick material and really the only thing that sets them apart from a normal pair of skinny jeans is the fact that they have an elastic waistband and no button or zipper, so no problems with a camel-toe and no worries about my buttcrack saying hello to everybody because I constantly check to make sure I'm not flashing poor innocent people walking by, I am very very paranoid about that. I've worn tutus over skinny jeans before and had no problems with no other teachers, so to this day I'm still not quite sure what her problem was- particularly when there are girls who go walking around in school with just regular leggings on and nothing over them- no shorts or skirt- at all. Thanks gals, for letting me see your panty-lines and your buttcracks all day long, I truly appreciate it. /salutes them sarcastically
- The dreaded "Why?" question. To be more specific, whenever I ask this question I am very well aware of how it could be taken two totally different ways- either the person I'm asking will think I'm doing it just to be stubborn, or they'll understand where I'm coming from, and to ensure the aforementioned I ask as politely and submissively as I can: "Okay, I'll do what you say, but may I ask why? Because I want to know what I'm doing wrong so I can understand and be sure to properly avoid it in the future :)"
Again thank you all for your advice, it's helped me reach my decision :)
As things begin to settle down with this new school year and all, I'll schedule a meeting with my councelor (note: NOT the one who had the problem with the jeggings, haha) and see if she thinks I should bother the pricipal or vice-principal about this subject. As for my teachers, I've already begun telling them that I plan to dress up a bit more on some days, and I've let them know that if they ever have a problem or a concern that I would be more than happy to talk with them about it so we can reach an understanding, ie if they have a problem with something I'm wearing and if they'd prefer I didn't wear it again, which hopefully shouldn't happen seeing as how deflated my skirts will be and the natural colors of my wigs and how few accessories I'll be wearing. And most importantly of all, I'll only wear my outfits on days when it's appropriate- that is, days when we won't be diving head-first into the charcoals and pastels in art class.
