Hey everyone, gotta quick question.

I heard from a friend that platforms are no longer in style in Japan @_@; imagine...everyone will be short again! Haha. This made me relize im not up-to-date on the latest fashions in Japan. Anyone know what kinda stuff is popular over there now? I can really find any recent pictures, everything is like 1997 or something like that. Any info would be welcome ^_^!

Almost no one wears platforms now. Mostly it's just cosplayers and a few REALLY hardcore lolitas. Most lolitas wear much lower heels nowadays. Gals stick to regular stiletto heels, or even just wear flat sneakers with tracksuits.

The most popular style last year was the really casual one... I don't know what it's called, but it's a little alternative, a little punky looking. Lots of layers -- T-shirt on top of long-sleeved shirt on top of big skirt on top of jeans. Clothing tends to be rather loose, not tight -- Japanese girls think that wearing clothes too large for them makes them appear to have thinner bodies. It's a lot like the way grunge became popular after the really flamboyant '80s styles in the US, except that the Japanese kids are clean.

I'm not surprised that you haven't seen any pictures of this recent style. It's really not worth the trouble of posting to the world, it's that boring.

It's usually refered to in the english-speaking world as 'fruits', but is really called japanese street punk fashion. it's refered to as 'fruits' since there is a japanese fashion magazine called 'FRUiTS' that takes pics of this style of fashion. Though americans tend to totally water down the street punk fashion, saying that armwarmers, a pleated skirt, and some band shirt is 'fruits'. Heh. (Then again some americans also say 'goth' stuff from hot topic is egl...)

Is it? I've seen Fruits and don't think this style is like that at all. Those people do really interesting things with fashion, but this doesn't seem creative or colorful. It's just lazy frumpy alterna-wear, really ordinary and casual style.

Is Fruits even still in print? I never saw it on Japanese magazine shelves. *confused*

the fruits you've seen are from the 90s. the newest editions are, like you said, rather boring. it's kinda disappointing =P

I only have one volume of fruits, from 2000, when it was still cool. You're right, now it's a lot more boring. The volume I have has lots of outrageous and colourful outfits sported by girls(and guys), and on the last few pages is a group of gothic lolitas. ^_^ I haven't really gotten any recent issues coz they are so disappointing. :\

I wouldn't really call 'FRUiTS' "punk" fashion... Just a bit of everything really, like in the magazines. Just my personal definition though really, everyone interprets it in different ways i suppose. To some people it's all the colourful stuff, etc...

I have some recent issues of FRUiTS and most of it is pretty boring. I prefer the older stuff. Some of the people in the book are AMAZING!

Keep in mind, "punk" from japan and "punk" from america are two WAAAAAAY different things. Just as "goth" from japan and "goth" from america. It's disappointing to see people even in this community think both overlap greatly and are pretty much the same(just gothloli involved petticoats 'sometimes'). I've heard it called 'japanese street punk fashion' by other people, friends living in japan, japanese friends living in japan, and hey...even one of my non-fruits, non-egl fashion magazines! So therefore, unless all those people are wrong, it's japanese street punk fashion.

Fair enough, although i have no idea what "punk" is in America [i haven't seen any punks when i've visited].
There are a fair amount of punks in FRUiTS, but they're not all punks [by my British standards anyway]. Maybe punk is used in the same way as "alternative" is here *shrugs*

Nope. And that's my point. The American "fruits" girls never really dress fruits. Hell, I have before in the past, as in dressed up so wild and tacky that if I were in japan, and looked japanese, I could have been in the magazine...If I were to encounter any of those 'fruits' girls dressed like that they'd probably think I was insane for ever leaving the house. Outrageous is NOT the new jean skirt you made from old jeans and some engrish shirt, coupled with armwarmers, legwarmers, and mary janes. That's normal clothes! :P

I think the shoes you are thinking of are called creepers. I've only seen Vivienne Westwood plats on the Japanese kids nowadays. Oh well, I still like them!

I'll try to help ^^

I just got new issues of Kera, Cutie and Cawaii, I'll try to scan in some pics later on tonight. The Kera had a small section on different style makeovers...the styles they did were:
"punx" ("punk" style seems to be very popular right now, all sorts of Sex Pistols references, red plaid and ripped up black outfits)
"Vivienne" (Vivienne Westwood style)
"Cheap" (putting together thrift store finds...mostly 70s/80s type stuff)
"Petite Lolita" (the classic little girl look, minus the "gothic"...it seems the child-like look is very in right now too)
"otona no onna" (adult woman style)
"core style" (which I'm guessing is "hardcore" style since it reminds me of a "heavy metal" style of dressing)
"Cyber" & "Gothic"

Like I said I'll work on getting these pages scanned tonight or in the next few days.
The Punk Lolita hybrid seems pretty popular now as well ^^

Platforms went out a few years ago... I think I read a news article about how women got the platforms cut off their shoes so they could still wear them and look stylish!
It's still fashionable for gothic lolitas to wear them, though, don't worry^^;;
